They are road legal and many modded insurance companies won't have a problem with them

Oh are they that bad? or did the guy using them never have mud tyres before?

He had muds before but your common style ones which gave better grip on wet roads & were so much quieter on the road

Many years ago I had a play in a Range Rover on the factory play ground, it was the obstacle course that they used for testing and demonstrating. We drove around an incredibly muddy field and an area they called the jungle.
Before we took the car out the chap from Range Rover apologised for only having a low spec car with part worn road tyres.
I don't think that tyres this aggressive are necessary.

As others have said get a second set of rims as they'll be crap on the road.
