After spending any day that was not raining checking over my T2 for the MOT, and fitting the motor mover to the caravan, I finally got around to doing the oil change on the T1...

Nice quick and easy job for the afternoon!!! I drained the oil into my new oil pan, and then set to work on the filter... On my T2, it's so easy, I just remove the air filter to turbo pipe, and in I go, only annoying thing is that weird cowling round the back of the filter that gets in the way of the webbing strap of the filter remover...

So, I take the equivalent pipes off the T1... and look down at the filter ready to remove it... no chance, the turbo is much further forward, and the filter is hidden right under it... There is no way to get a strap round it from above. Not a problem, I read on here about going through the wheel arch, so set to taking the wheel and rubber cover off etc.

I could see the filter, Right there... but getting to it.. well that was different story... Still no way to get a webbing strap on it, even from under it (I now know the tool I need to do it in the future is one of those steel band ones). Anyway, I have an old weird filter remover, which is like 4 part circles joined together, with a handle on one. by bodging it and denting the filter, I got the filter to move, and unscrewed it....

Now... at this point, I thought I was on the home run....

But... once you have it undone the filter, there is no way to get it out... The engine mount, which us actually curved to go round the filter is in the way to take it forward, and the weird cowling is in the way to stop it going sideways or back... After an eternity of trying it every which way I could, and also trying to get that cowling off, which the bolts are so tight, I was scared it might sheer, so left, I managed to spill the filter oil all over the place, but still could not get it out. In the end, I jacked the engine up, and bent the cowling a bit.

Still, it's done now, for the next 6 months...:(

Anyone know what that cowling is for, and could I get away with cutting it down a bit?

Now the good news, having said all that, I was really impressed that every ball joint, swivel, and steering mount has a grease nipple on it, so you can grease up the entire suspension, I have never seen that on a car before.

I always found removing the 2.7 oil a right swine of a job, you need double jointed fingers, wrists and elbows, Nissan didn't give it much thought.
Much much easier on my 3.0l.

Done my filter on my Td from above, used a strap wrench, was able to remove it vertically without spilling a drop.
BUT there a high risk of dropping it though, so prepare for spillage.

Also 3/4 filled the new one without spilling a drop too. The only problem is tightening it up from the top. I actually stand on a box by the front nearside wheel, and lean over the wing.

However, it is much easier to do it through the near side wheel arch, there is just enough room to get the filter out over the chassis as far forward as possible, slight spill, but again 3/4 fill new one, without spilling a drop. Wheel and rubber cover need to be removed.

The secret to removing the old filter is to do it on a warm engine, NOT HOT...
Is the Td so different to the Tdi that makes it more difficult ?

There is a technique to doing this, it is the worst filter I have ever changed though.
Lining up the threads on the filter that is now heavier due to the oil in it, twisting it and doing this blind and at arms length.

Did mine a couple of weeks before the MOT to give the best chance with emissions.

Did I tell you it passed.................................. EDIT..... WE have all heard about it passing first time without any advisories........:doh

Best regards,

Rustic

The T1 Ferret is on about is very different to our T2s. Shame we don't have more info on them but there must be an easier way to change the oil filter?!

Isn't it the same engine though as the td:nenau:nenau

I did my oil and filter today for the first time, what a feckin palaver! :lol

Next time I'll have purchased one of those metal band filter wrenches, it's without doubt the most awkward oil filter I've ever done. I eventually managed to get it threaded on the housing from under the truck, and then tightened it from the top.
Getting it off was easy, I was lulled!!!!!:lol

This one will definitely need a metal strap wrench for the next time...:clap

Yes you did:lol:lol

When you say "Strap Wrench", is it one of the metal band ones, or the Webbing ones that wrap round a spindle?

TDi is a piece of cake, and I just use the webbing wrench, you just reach over the wing, and take it off... Not had a problem at all, and done it twice now. It is nowhere near the Engine mount.

Is your TD filter right next to the engine mount? as I said, on the T1, the mount is actually curved to go round the filter

Yes you are right, there are a lot of differences. The trouble is, the manual on Briggie's site sort of covers it, but does not give any details on how to actually remove it.

I do my filter hand tight. The next year I can undo it with my hand, no need to over tighten them

I have a bluepoint filter claw anyhow

Did mine a easy way, bit messy but the bit the oil drops onto it wont rust :lol got a piece of old carpet under the engine, unscrewed the filter and let it drop to the floor, job done.

My strap wrench is a rubber strap with a plastic handle, the strap goes into the handle and the handle pushes against the loose end of the strap to help grip it.

In fact I bought 2 sizes, the smaller one is actually easier to use in the confined space.

Similar to this..

hope it helps..

We have something like that for doing tight Jam Jar lids... Hmmmm, next time I will just have to distract my wife long enough to nick it...:lol

I only ever do them up hand tight, but I always seem to get cars where the previous owner was related to the incredible hulk...

Is the filer claw like a large pair of pliers? they have something like that at the motor factors, but not sure how good they would be.

Ahhh, you would not get that in there... I have those cups that go over the bottom of the filter, and it is so tight up against the engine mount, there is not enough room to get that on either, let alone then het something on there to turn it..

When ou look through the wheel arch, you are looking at the top of the filter, the bottom is below the chassis rail.

This is the one I'm getting: :thumb2

There isn't any space down there for conventional filter wrenches, and I have hands like shovels (so I'm told ).

Next time I will be prepared! :doh

Mick

That's the sort, there is also a Sealey one that goes straight on, which I wondered about..
