After spending any day that was not raining checking over my T2 for the MOT, and fitting the motor mover to the caravan, I finally got around to doing the oil change on the T1...
Nice quick and easy job for the afternoon!!! I drained the oil into my new oil pan, and then set to work on the filter... On my T2, it's so easy, I just remove the air filter to turbo pipe, and in I go, only annoying thing is that weird cowling round the back of the filter that gets in the way of the webbing strap of the filter remover...
So, I take the equivalent pipes off the T1... and look down at the filter ready to remove it... no chance, the turbo is much further forward, and the filter is hidden right under it... There is no way to get a strap round it from above. Not a problem, I read on here about going through the wheel arch, so set to taking the wheel and rubber cover off etc.
I could see the filter, Right there... but getting to it.. well that was different story... Still no way to get a webbing strap on it, even from under it (I now know the tool I need to do it in the future is one of those steel band ones). Anyway, I have an old weird filter remover, which is like 4 part circles joined together, with a handle on one. by bodging it and denting the filter, I got the filter to move, and unscrewed it....
Now... at this point, I thought I was on the home run....
But... once you have it undone the filter, there is no way to get it out... The engine mount, which us actually curved to go round the filter is in the way to take it forward, and the weird cowling is in the way to stop it going sideways or back... After an eternity of trying it every which way I could, and also trying to get that cowling off, which the bolts are so tight, I was scared it might sheer, so left, I managed to spill the filter oil all over the place, but still could not get it out. In the end, I jacked the engine up, and bent the cowling a bit.
Still, it's done now, for the next 6 months...
Anyone know what that cowling is for, and could I get away with cutting it down a bit?
Now the good news, having said all that, I was really impressed that every ball joint, swivel, and steering mount has a grease nipple on it, so you can grease up the entire suspension, I have never seen that on a car before.
