There is nothing special about the glow plug relay, there is no timer or other stuff in it, any generic 70 amp relay will do, I have a Toyota one on my off road motor, same size as the relays under the fuse board under drivers area, Rick

This is the one in the wing your referring to?
This is the one I'm thinking of.

Am I thinking of the wrong thing? What is the glow plug relay then?

Jim I check the inventory in the drawer and the last one I had went in June on eBay I'm afraid.

Rick is right about being able to use an relay of the same specification, I tend to cut the plugs off too though with the longest amount of wire possible when I get them and also grab the brackets that hold them to the wing too :thumb2

Yes, the Glowplug relay is in a hole in the drivers side wing, beside the battery. The standard one is a metal cased thing, but even though it is quite large, only rated at 70 amp. You can put any generic relay there, as long as it is rated 70 amp or higher. This sort on Ebay are perfect, and you should be able to get one from a local autofactor.

The Glowplug 80amp fuse is located behind the power steering tank. My fuse seems to be a different shape to the standard (PAL) Block ones you can buy easily, so I used the old blown fuse to make up an adaptor to allow me to use the cheap, easy to buy ones.

I have a big black Lucas relay in wing with a white wire going in and a white one with a blue strip going from this relay up to buzzbar.
I also have a fuse box behind power steering pump beside which is another smaller relay box containing 4 blue relays. In here the blue relay I thought had something to do with glow plugs is a 4 pin not the 5 pin as previously mentioned.

I'm totally lost here...
Does anyone have pics of what their glow relays look like?
I have searched the forum loads to no avail.
Please help....

The 5 pin relay just has an extra terminal, which can be ignored... Basically, a 4 pin relay is simply, on/off, where as a 5 pin is a change over, it has one terminal that is on when the relay is not energised, and then that pin goes to off, and the other pin becomes live, when it is energised. I just posted that as an example.

What year is your Terrano? I know that Suz's later T2, has a different Fuse box to My older one.

Hi lazy ferret

I really appreciate your help here.
She can be awkward to start on frosty mornings in Scotland here and it's only going to get colder.
Mine is a 2.7 lwb 55 plate.
It has the same fuse box as yours and right beside the fuse box there is another black plastic box, same length but narrower.
In this narrower box there are 3 blue relays and I black relay. The larger of the blue relays might be involved with the glow plugs?...?? Does yours have this? Are these relays?
It has 4 pins instead of 5 as previously mentioned in other posts.
I might try my local scrappies tomorrow or motor factors for another one of these blue relays.
The big black relay in the wing though might be harder to source, if that's faulty too? I don't know?

Cheers mate

OK, that is the later T2, which is Suz's.

I just popped out, and had a look, but there is nothing on the cover, saying what those relays in the box do. I turned the ignition on, and wile it by no means a scientific test, I could not feel any in there that clicked in time to the main relay switching on and off.

I just checked her driver manual, and it does not mention them at all, so I then checked the workshop manual, which to be fair, is predominately for the earlier models, but it only shows one relay in the circuit, which is the one in the hole in the inner wing, by the battery.

So back to the beginning, I think that as long as the large 80amp fuse, in the back of the fuse box I photo'd is not blown, then it is most likely the relay down by the battery. That is the relay that Rick (Solarman) was saying, while it looks very specific, is just an 80 amp relay, so you can easily replace it with any 80amp relay.

Just found it in the workshop manual, page EL 241

The relays in the box are:-

Cooling fan relay
Air con relay
EMC relay
accessory relay
Horn relay

It only shows the one down by the battery as the Glowplug relay.

Lazy ferret

You are the man.

I will try to get one of those big black relays

This is a great forum thanks to the likes of you. Well done lad...
