glow plug, engine shut off

Right, this is a strange question but bear with me here,. When my dad uses my terrano, he hardly ever let's the glowplugs heat the diesel meaning the engine cranks for a long time and will wear the starter and ain't really good for the engine eg, black smoke comes out and it p****s me off is there any way I can I can dissable the engine from cranking until the glowplug light goes out??:nenau:nenau

yes you can, just connect another relay to GP relay that switches the ignition to starter solenoid connection.
If I recall correctly Renault Clio's were arranged so there would be no engine cranking while the GP light was on...

What sort of relay? And is there any sort of diagram for wireing?

I don't want to come across as patronising. but wouldn't it be easier to just educate your Dad regarding the correct starting procedure rather than go adding, what is really. unnecessary additional electrical items.

Sorry if this comes across as a bit annoying, It honestly is not intentional but If I was in your situation it is what I would do, Particularly as you say you own the Truck and not your Dad. That and the fact that if the Starter motor gets damaged or something else, I dare say it's you that has to fork out for it.

I dare say if the boot was on the other foot and the truck was your Dads, but every time you drove it you Rode the clutch or pulled away in 3rd gear I'm sure your Dad would pull you up on it.

A little respect for other peoples property goes along way in the eyes of the owner.

You dont come across as patronising, I completely agree, the problem is, he uses a petrol car without glowplugs and he sometimes forgets with diesels. I keep on reminding :doh

Stick Post it notes over the Dials, on the Rear View mirror & on the steering wheel centre with the words GLOW PLUG LIGHT on it, so he sees it when he gets in.
He'll soon start to remember when he uses the truck if he has to keep peeling them off every time he gets in it.

What an easy mistake to make though! we have 3 other diesels and none of them have glow plugs (well they do but not for starting with a timer) so it's easy to forget.

In support of rayf3262's response, my wife's Renault Scenic has an auto-start button (no key to turn) that delays the engine cranking until the glow plugs have 'glowed'. So a relay that will not feed the starter circuit until the same has happened seems to be a good idea.

i think to be honest i'll put a relay in, a relay is cheap and ive got miles of 12v wire

Might have a pop at that myself. I quite often forget to wait for the Maverick glow plug light to go out as My Peugeot Hdi engine gp light only comes on when it's really cold.

I had same problem with same engine in picasso, 1.6Hdi, instant start, no light, never seen it.

I have done it in mav, but even if you remember and try it, then wait for a minute, then it seems to reset the glow plug timer to a much shorter time.:doh

read somewhere it has to be below -5'c for the light to come on, but I've seen it for the first time recently and it hasn't been that cold. :nenau

I have wondered why the gp light in the maverick doesn't come on after I try and start it from cold then stop. Guess the temp in the chambers must get up pretty quickly ?
