Local gearbox shop says will die soon

Labour to change £450 inc vat, need to find a box

Where can I get a decent used box?

Anyone got one?:bow:bow

Let me speak to James mate, I'll see if we can get you hooked up :thumb2

You say it is noisy? is that when driving or just idling, shame as the scrapper that I took to the scrap yard recently had a box on it but decided not to keep it as these boxes rarely go down, :doh Rick

Hi Rick,
This is the same gearbox we spoke about a few months ago
Very loud whine when under load in 3rd gear
Not much worse than then but I am planning on keeping the Mav so perhaps get it done later in the year

Might be an idea to buy a second hand box and have it refurbished before fitting it.
Every manual terrano I've owned has had a noisy lay shaft bearing but even on the one with 180K on it it was never noisy through the gears.
£450 sounds expensive just to swap a box.
Can get a new clutch thrown in for that round here for that sort of price.

Thanks for the update
Labour charges down here are around £50 an hour and as Rick said it would run into 2 days I thought it was a fair price without all the travel etc
The Mav is running OK except for the noise and I dont do much mileage, it has done me well for the 9 years I have had it, 2 tyres, new pads and a caliper rebuild both sides, and a half exhaust, only 1 small weld repair near the N/S belt bolt, almost rust free, so I am hoping it will see me out until I get the telegram from Charles, only 19 years :D
It is not noisy through the gears only 3rd under load, jumps out of 2nd on the over run, I just hold the stick and it stays in, best way to describe it, just like an old army 3 tonner from the early 60's
I will ask the gearbox guy, how much to rebuild it
I was planning on a new complete clutch
I will be guided by you guys,

Gearbox needed

Hi Guys, do any of you know a good place to get a gearbox for my maverick?
Transmission shop will not get a used one for me in case it is a dud, sounds very reasonable
he can rebuild mine but may cost over £1,500 worst case
lots out there on www from £250 up but I dont want to risk it
He say complete clutch will be less than £300, but will only need what is too worn
Not a panic noise is not getting noticeably worse but may go in a bad place or in the middle of a job

Any input gratefully received

I've asked a few of my trusted breakers for you, I'm very surprised Rick doesn't have something and is probably closest to you.

I assume its a TD?

Sourced a box for you mate.

TD box not a TDi which I'm led to believe will fit too but you'll need to switch the propshafts too, this one will go straight on though.

Came off a 95 Maverick, £200

PM me if you want it
