Sorry if this has allready been covered but a rattle comes from gearbox area when in neutral with clutch pedal up, goes when down or in gear, is this a gearbox or a clutch problem? thanks M

Might be worth turning the radio up an let it develop before getting to concerned, have a look underneath to see if any thing else is causing a rattle first eg exhaust bracket snaped or drop links worn, drop links were my mysterious rattel

Thanks, sounds hopefull, will have a look in the morning, would lifting the clutch pedal up and down affect a noise from somthing like the exhaust? seem to remember reading something about a gearbox mount that was prone to cracking or breaking< if so do you think ths could be the culprit? cheers M

Mine's got the same problem & started a thread earlier this week about it. Went to Nissan & they were useless All they said was that it was going to cost £900+ to fix it  So i'm leaving it be for the moment to see how it develops before I hand over that sort of money

900! hope its not whatever that is! looks like i will be ignoring it as well, love my truck, seems the engines are a lot better than transmissions!

Dont think much wrong with the transmissions mine has done 163K got full history untill i owned it it had only had replaced the eletric arieal, tyres, exhaust, break linings, radiator, coverd 140 k ive copped clutch, water pump, altenator, drop links and wheel slaves.only run of the mill repairs you get with most cars and i am not complaining, one of the best cars i have ever owned, my wife and i were discussing what we would replace it with in a few years and we both agreed another one  8)

g/box was a weakness with early ones but think yours should have different g/box also seem a clever member fitted a 90degree elbow to allow slight overfill of box to give every chance living longer

I have just nipped out to check mine at the moment it's parked between a wall and the house....... the clutch/gearbox or whatever rattles when the pedal is up and goes quiet when down.

So I thought I would go for a run warm it up ......and I thought I would try it in 4 wheel drive, selected in driveway and pulled into road, the r/n/s appeared to lock up [seemed to be dragging that wheel] so I reversed for a distance then moved forward........now I am not used to 4 wheel drive, but the whole vehicle felt like it was dragging, no noise just felt like it was being pulled back, when I stopped it felt like it was stuck to the ground...handbrake off etc, so I disengaged 4 wheel drive it immediately felt free and in fact on the same bit of road when it felt stuck it would roll slightly[as it should] any comments please
Obviously a separate issue from what I went out to check.

DONT DRIVE ON HARD DRY SURFACES IN 4X4 you will break something.

You should only use 4x4 when in could be needed, ie gravel tracks, mud, wet grass etc. There is no centre differential and the transmission winds up as the wheels all try to turn at sligtly different speeds, ultimatly something will break. A driveshaft, CB joint or something in the gearbox.
