This was covered recently but I have a few further questions bugging me.

So it rattle on idle, but disapperars when clutch depressed or u raise revs.

Someone mentioned input shaft bearing ?

Could it be indicative of layshaft bearings ? Or would these rumble when driving ?

Can the input shaft bearing be done without taking the whole gearbox appart like when I do clutch ? As otherwise it might be better to get a recon box lined up for clutch time

same prob with mine a couple of years ago, clutch thrust bearing....new clutch fitted job done, good luck

Clutch bearing when rick changed my clutch and bearing noise stopped and clutch peddle was nice n soft to press

funny i've got a rough rattle post clutch repair,
certanly wasnt there before repair.

if let clutch up in neutral rattles rather like diesel
rattle, only hear it in car, not over engine noise
if head under bonnet.

noticed tiny bit of throttle goes to pint thought
perhaps turn up idle, also found yesterday
depends how fast let pedal up, if gently doesnt
do it.

wondered if input shaft, so is down to being
disturbed by new clutch job, is it hurting
anything, would it be a bodge to adjust throttle

car has 63000miles on odo.

clurch is lovely and light, eng thougth too light!

drives lovely, just done 120 mile fast road trip.

tbh if wasnt lookng wouldnt have found as i
tend to keep clutch dipped, n gear at traffic
queues. situation would only notice if stood
talking to someone and left motor running
and put handbrake on or say jumped out
to hitch caravan etc.

get rpm checked and adjusted , using independant tachometer
change g/box oil, put heaver grade in, may stiffen gear changes and lower mpg but will quieten box!! i like the "clurch" bit sounds very "cool"

Fingers crossed

Had this exact problem with mine, when you release the clutch in neutral on tickover. You get a loud rumbling noise at the back of the gearcase which gets less when you rev the engine or coast slowly in nuetral until the vehicle comes to a stop where the noise starts up again.

The problem is the input shaft bearing clutch end. It's a gear box out job and while your at it you may as well change the entire clutch, spiggot bearing, and release bearing because you don't want to go in there again.... do you:doh

The input shaft bearing can breakup and distribute fragments throught the box in the oil leading to total failure, It is not feasible to just change the input shaft bearing - there are other known faults in the gear set which need attention.

Do not use GL5 in these boxes - it will wreck them.

To sum up my week £550+Vat recon box and £875 for labour and all parts leads to a grand total of .....:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

What grade oil for fear box then guys ? And how much to buy ?

My truck is worth a similar amount as that repair !!

I think I will run my truck until the gear box dies ! Then get another used box and do the same ...

It will Possibly last a good while with this rattle anyhow

car has 63000miles on !

That seems low for a clutch...

What do others get before changing the clutch for the first time?

I know it depends on the driving history, road, motorways, caravan towing, off roading, but 63000 is very low in my opinion.

i think on a T2 it is generally 80-90k but as you say depends on who has been driving it!

Yep - same situation as me .... but .... could you buy another truck in the same or better without a serious problem for the same money?
You know the condition of your truck - ... :thumb2

If you go through the hassle of changing the box you may as well pay a few hundred quid more to have a recon with a years guarantee ( try david beumont 4X4 gearbox specialists £550+Vat exchange)

P.S I forgot to say included in the list was a clutch arm which a piece had broken off and was ramdomly rattling around in the bell housing. Clutch still worked fine tho:)

GCK2294 Clutch Kit - £174.91
305317F000 Clutch Fork - £45-98 ( if your has any damage to it)

You also need
3051403E10 Spring holder £2.80
3051403E11 Spring holder £2.50
30534G2300 Spring retainer £2.40

On our 2001 2.7, I had a new clutch fitted at about 70.000, it also needed the front oil seal as when the box was moved back, the guy got covered in oil, so he says :augie
We do tow a caravan, but I do wonder if it was more oil contamination than wear:)
