Hi all on my 1998 2.7tdi terrano the box when hot is a bit noisy in neutral i guess input shaft bearings, how long will the box go on for and would you buy a used low millage or go for a recon box.the box changes gear very smoothly and with no noise any advice would be helpful.

they sound noise in netural but will go on to do lots more miles before they go bang mine is noise in netural only, problem with second hand is if they have had wrong oil put in that might be the cause of the noise bearing hope that helps

my on road work motor was very noisy when I bought it over 2 years ago, done 130 k now, and I tow regularly and it is still going strong, Rick

Thanks for replys i have changed the oil in the box with GL4 gear oil so hope this will help .

Mine had the death rattle pretty much since I bought it.
I figured that £80 of quality gear oil would be a sound investment to try to save having to procure a replacement 'box and change it given how much of a pig of a job it is.
I opted for this as I use the lightweight shockproof to good effect in my highly modified petrol turbo Nissan.

Yes, mine had the death rattle/whine too, only it was the layshaft bearings, I actually purposely blew mine up in a field as I had another low mileage box from my other truck. Was very satisfying killing the old box and clutch

Did the oil make any difference to the noise ?

Mines rattled like fook since I bought it for a year and 8000miles its done 150k, but its so fkn smooth, no baulking or crunching, I reckon it will be ok for a bit longer :)

Just been reading all the info, does it do what it says.

75W90 GL-4 gear oil (similar to SAE 5W40/10W40 engine oil viscosity)
Popular in Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, VW/Audi, Lotus Elise/Exige, Toyota
Offers quicker shifts, perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction
Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage
High performance gear protection and longer synchro life
Eliminates notchy shifting, even when cold
Satisifies the gear oil viscosity requirements of 75W, 80W and motor oil viscosities of SAE 40, 10W40, and 15W40
Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified

What's your take on the stuff Kishada ??

a answer to Stinka i think it is a bit quieter since the oil change, bit stiff to get into second when cold i know this is common on some vehicles are the terrano's like this, but sweet gear changes when warm.

Fireboby/Stinka, i've done about 8 thou since I got mine with the noise as well.
Two reasons for paying that much for oil were to prolong the life of the 'box and because I was asking more power with a speedchip I wanted to give it the best protection I could.

I've had zero problems shifting when cold during the winter, shifts as sweet at -6C as it does at 20C.
The rattle is no better to be honest, either that or it got worse in the last 8 thou miles and the oil is masking it :lol but the 'box is absolutely faultless in operation coming up for an indicated 102,000 miles.

I think its kind of rustic, endearing and characterful this gear box rattle

In fact, in future I'm not buying a Terrano unless it has a decent gearbox rattle :D

my gearbox also rattles like fook untill i press the clutch.
I tend to switch the engine off rather than give myself leg ache.

Hey who is taking my name in vain here?
My Mav doesn't rattle... but as I get older I do...

I had some minor gearbox whine when reducing speed using the gearbox to slow down.

I added some Molyslip for gearboxes, I posted on here some time ago on what to put in, how much etc, in fact it was based on the recommendation from Richard of Molyslip.

Gear box is virtually silent, I never notice any noise now on deceleration.:thumbs

Best regards,

Rustic

I just found my original post from 2007, wow that's over 6 years ago, when I did this treatment. In fact the post is older than this.
My mav gearbox has been fine since.

I have posted this article before, it is from Richard at Molyslip products, there is a link on this site.. I'm guess he could ship to you.
I have used this product and the box is certainly quieter after the treatment.

Moly slip gearbox treatment
The Multiglide is for both manual and automatic trans as well as semiautomatic (tiptronic) as well as limited slip diff.
It just happens to be a fully synthetic detergent rich viscosity improver with anti foaming agents and seal preservatives .It can be mixed with barium based hypoid gear oils, in cases wear there is severe bearing wear and or leaking seals. It is also perfectly suited for MTF applications. (newer trans that use a synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid)
For you needs about 105ml of G in the trans and about 100ml of Multiglide that should quiet the bearings right down and help keep your seals sticky and pliable just in case the bearing wear has stretched the seals any. use another 100 ml of Multiglide in the rear diff as it should be a LSD.
I have the Multiglide in a 250ml so you don't have to buy the 500ml flask. You can just use the G in the trans and it will help but the blend will work better.
You are always welcome to call if you have any questions 9am-9pm everyday on 01327 354 356 All the best, Richard
So far they have had luck with the Multiglide as it remains very sticky even under heaviest stress conditions.
If you catch it earlier and the trans is standard with out over drive then 175ml of Molyslip2001G®
If the whine has already started then the Multiglide is a better choice as it is thicker and stickier. It can also be used in the rear diff.
If there is some bearing wear you can mix the G and multiglide now while this won't solve the problem it will buy a lot of time 80,000 miles or so.
The Multiglide will help the compounds in the G o better stick to and bond with the worn bearings.
You would still only want to use the Multiglide in the rear diff.
So far users have come back to saying the noise stopped in a couple severe cases there was even some vibration and the mix of Multi and G cut the whine and vibration.
If there is vibration the the main input shaft bearing is severely worn. Enough to allow the shaft to to move around.
if you plan to do the rear diff, she has an LSD back end so you want to use Multiglide 110ml.
The G should be fine for the trans and one bottle will be more then enough as you will only use about 160ml if you plan to do the rear diff, she has an LSD back end so you want to use Multiglide 110ml.

Thanks for that Rustic am i thinking you put 100ml of multiglide and 105ml of g in the gearbox or am'i not reading it right?.
