Decided to change the gearbox oil today ,as to my knowledge it's never been done in its time with me. So ,4 litres of gl4 ready to go, loosened the fill plug, just to make sure I can fill it.

Can I get the effin drain plug out ?!, can I eck, used a 4' bar , still wouldn't budge, copious amounts of freeing oil and still no luck. So much torque exerted I'm in danger of rounding the square plug.

Over to guys for some wisdom.

Gearbox oil is the only one I haven't changed. When I did my axles I wire brushed the hell out of the drain plugs, gave them a good dose of PlusGas and repeated for two days before trying to shift them.

I sure someone will have some better plan. I didn't bother with my gearbox oil as:

a: Only done 52k
b: some other members have had issues with the gearboxes AFTER changing the oil.

:nenau

Try a wee bit of heat on the gearbox casting. Just play the flame around the perimeter of the plug, but don't let it get anywhere near red. And perversely, try tightening it a tiny bit first . . . .should help break the thread free :thumb2

An ex member on here said take the truck for a good run to get it all nice n hot. Apparently this is for the drain plug. That said several garages have had a go at mine and never got it. Ended up last guy had some kind of pump and pumped the oil out.

Take the gear lever off and pour the oil in the top.

Got it.

Used a 5' bar, bit of heat and it finally turned. Only trouble is the plug is pretty well chewed up. Where can I get a replacement ?

it is a standard half inch male iron plug from your local plumbers merchant although they tend to stock the male square type rather than the female but if that is all you can get then stick it in the level hole and use the old level plug in the drain, Rick

Good point, bit of lateral thinking, thanks.

Be aware that they can be straight, or tapered, so compare first.
What I do is coat the threads of the plug with gas tite, or hematite, no setting sealant. As well as forming a great oil tight seal, it fills the threads so corrosion can't take place, and years later, they unscrew with no effort. My 20 year old Mav is proof it works lol.... not mentioned that for a while lol...:doh:doh
