just changed gearbox oil on my 2004 terrano for some comma ep 80-90 gl4 oil as recommended in tec specs and have found it now feels more notchy also I found it took more like 4.5 litres than the 3.6 litres listed in the specs the oil that came out looked past its best but the box was smoother should ihave put 75-90 in instead

Comma Gearbox Oils ?

Do not think you will notice the difference between & 75 & 80 W when cold but personally I avoid Comma as it is at the cheaper end of the market so will lack the additatives that you would get with Fuchs or Shell etc.

Might be worth adding some aftermarket stuff to compensate. e.g Molyslip or similar.
I also use fully synthetic in all my autos.

reduced friction additives should not be added to synchromesh boxes as they rely on some friction for the baulk rings to function (these are the cone clutches that stop a gear change until both parts are in sync/rotating at the same speed), unless the product is specified for synchromesh, in which case it is probably not worth adding as its friction reduction will be severely restricted, Rick

That's why Rick gets so pee'd off when the know it alls come here and tell people to add Molyslip into their gearboxes

I quite agree, out of order there...
Include me as a know it all then.:spanking:
I have promoted Molyslip for gearboxes in the past, based on advice from the supplier, and many people have had good results, noise reduction being one of them.

Don't know why I bother to give advice.
Due to my MRI scan tomorrow and Biopsies, I have enough to worry about, I might take a break for a while.
I might look in though...

Wah! Tell me that's a tongue in cheek post.

Rustic, we need regular updates on how old your car is, so you are not allowed to go far. Good luck with the scans mate, hope they show nothing more than underseal :thumb2

Thanks, I'm really concerned, initial view by the Consultant was Advanced and localised Prostate "C". with luck, if it is localised then treatment can start.
I'm still recovering from my shoulder replacement... what a year.
Mav passed it's last MOT with no advisories, but it does need a waxoyl top up when I can.

Firstly I think I should apologise for the way my post came across, I was jesting at the fact that sometimes we get members come here with no prior knowledge of these cars then start saying "I've added this that and the other for years" that may be true but you can bet your life that it wasn't in a Maverick or Terrano. The fact that Rick has almost 8 or 9 Terrano's and regularly off roads them etc was merely a compliment to Rick not only on his stellar knowledge but of years of proven experience as well shown in the technical depth of his reply.

People may have added it and had good "initial" results but I'd like to question whether it has or hasn't effected the overall life of the box

Lastly and most importantly, Rustic, our thoughts are all with you through this difficult and stressful time, I wish you all the best with your test results!!! :thumbs

I will keep everything crossed for you mate. If I were closer, I would come and do the underseal top up for you...obviously while you were checking the work, over my shoulder.

Rustic do not worry about your results, get them first, absolutely no point in worrying about it.

Banshee do shut up, you only dig a deeper hole, no not really but you know what I mean, Rick

We've all got our fingers crossed for you Rustic.

Hang on in there bloke!
