Hi All, would just like to ask a question please, i have a 2005 terrano 11 swb van 3.0 di se and changed the main manual gearbox oil the other day. In the workshop manual it states 3.6 lts of oil and also after speaking to my local nissan dealer was told the same amount. BUT i drained out 5 lts and it took 5 ltrs until it came out of level bung so whats going on here then ? Any ideas please. Can any body also tell me if a nissan cabstar rear brake adjuster will fit a 2005 terrano as i need one and nissan want £134.42 for one and no one does a non gen for a terrano but a cabstar looks the same and can be bought for £24.99 ! Any help appreciated please.

Hi there,
This issue is on going, it has been aired many times, in my limited experiance you must only put in the 3ltr as what nissan say, as the bung is just a filler not a level bung, as in the diff or front axle, this is an opinion i have got from reading numerous posts on here, but i stand corrected as always.

rustygates.

Thanks for your reply i can see what you are saying but if you look in the workshop manual i have, it clearly shows, "fill to this level" which is at the threads on the filler plug so gets confusing !

odd, i drained my gearbox recently (2003 2.7tdi) and the old oil almost filled a 5L cointainer, but everyone said put 3.6 in! in the end i put 4L in and have had no problems. But bear in mind if it says GL4 oil in your book, use GL4 - the sulphur in GL5 can wreck any brass based componments in the gear box!

there isn't a filter on the gear box, is there? and even so 1.4 L of oil would make it a chuffing big filter mate :thumb2

Thanks again for reply's, i have the same manual and see what you are saying but if you look at the diagram it says "fill to this level " which is at bottom of thread like any normal gearbox level, therefore nearly 5 ltrs required so condredicts itself !:doh
Not sure what to do really, i drained out 5 ltrs so put 5 back in but a bit concerned, main dealer wasn't much help when spoke to them either.

as i said, i took 5 out and just put 4 back in - but make sure it's the right oil!

i agree but i didnt measure exactly. i do know there was more than 4 litres cos i drained into a 4 ltr container and spent an hour or so cleaning the road.as my book and data cd both said 3.6 ltr i put the 4 ltrs i had bought into box but did it not come out of filler plug. so i assumed it was a filler only and not a level indicator.

Hope this clears this up, just spoke to another Nissan Main Dealer who says fill gearbox with 3.6 ltrs as it states in manual and dont go by drawing or the fact that its a level and filler hole. He said you would normally think you fill up until it comes out but in some cases its not. So have now got to try and take 1.4 ltrs out which should be fun !!.

Leave the fill plug in, so that air can't get in, then slowly remove the drain plug, that way it should come out slowly, more in glugs... as the air gets past the drain plug, and have the plug ready to put back in.

Wear gloves ( you have to wear protection these days ) and roll up your sleeves...
I tend to use a sheet of cardboard on the ground first, then a suitable container, and have a paper roll to hand to wipe your hands and sump plug before you come out.

All done and dusted, drained down completely into clean container and refilled putting 3.6 ltrs in. Also changed LSD diff oil, which again is strange as book says 2.8 ltrs but only took 2 .1 approx before came out of filler, seems to be totally different to whats written, never owned a vehicle like it which is so differed to the workshop manual.
Phil.

the later T2's have a smaller diff capacity :thumb2

Does any one know how much oil goes in the auto box of a 2.7 terrano:):)

There are a few bits common with the cabstar, so its possible, but you'd need to compare physically as I've not heard of anyone fitting one, but that doesn't mean it doesnt, just that they never looked.:thumb2
