when driving after going over a bump or trying toaccelerate quickly away from a road junction my mistral 2.7 auto will not change up. if i stop and restart the engine its ok. also if i wait long enough it will some times go up.only does this randomly. any asvise would be grat as this is my first nissan and not very familiar with niggles/faults etc. miccmacc

it sounds like you are going into " power mode " ...... look at your dash , a little yellow light will be on , on the at selector switch ,....leave the switch in the middle position, and try not to accelerate too quickly or it will go into power mode again , also avoid kick down , to stop power mode simply press the a/t switch back to the centre position .

Sadly you've bought quite an old vehicle with an automatic gearbox. Auto boxes are a bit of a witches brew TBH and there is very limited knowledge on here, mainly because they are extremely complex in operation. Your best bet is to find an auto specialist who might be able to advise you how to proceed, but if he's a good one, the best advice seriously is to run it til it breaks.....the costs of refurbishing it (around £1500) are the same whether you are looking for a potential problem or an actual one, but with a potential or intermittent fault, finding and fixing it isn't always guaranteed.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but thats the reality I'm afraid.... :(

You might try changing fluids ( as well as a filter that lurks in the guts of the box I believe) but even that might not be a wholly DIY job....

Lets hope its down to Briggies explanation and that you are just unfamiliar with how it is supposed to work..

try what briggie says.
he has an auto.. also if free to try

yes zippy i also have a 1995 mistral auto , it takes a lot of getting used to , as well as the a/t switch , its also a very good idea to check atf ... theres a link in the workshop downloads .:thumb2

Hay Briggie I met slimlfc68 Sunday. he called in for a tea.. had a chat, hes got an auto too.

if you drive it like a v8 chevvy and floor the pedal , you will get nowhere fast , and the engine wil scream its head off , but if you drive it like a nissan diesel ...its the dogs danglies once you get used to it :thumb2

he has a few troubles with it.. all sorted now

bet his grin is just like yours..

he wanted to play in the snow, but was all gone when he get here... he didnt get any at home...

not at all .... its a highly complex piece of engineering , and its the dogs danglies once you are at one with it :thumb2

maybe you should do a download Briggie

must admit it took me quite a while to get used to the " pecularities " of the mistral auto box , but once i did its amazing :thumb2 .... ask clive or jim , theyve been in it ..... did it seem slow on acceleration and power clive ? :augie

i have never known an auto to be so odd

all my auto's including the paj have been the same, button for power and one for eco, you get in put foot down and it changes gear even at full throttle, and the kick down has never affected the gearbox i use the kick down in mine to over take when needed even in eco

my isuzu may have a normal auto but still beat you from a standing start:augie:augie

would i ? not so sure

for driving around town its great but get it on to the slippery stuff you lose the advantage a manual gives with engine braking as you can see in becky's video the paj in front was an auto and the brake lights were on most the time in a manual you just get that bit of extra control :thumbs
