Yes all in 1k sounds about right, but could be more, Rick

How is it this expensive?

James has gearboxes for £200ish, surely it would be easier and cheaper just to replace the box? and put some new oil in?

Is that price for 3.0l box.Need to establish if the 3.0 box is the same as 2.7 if it is then they are plentiful and cheap.

Ah!!!! my bad, that's for a 2.7tdi box which I have been told are solid hence why they are so plentiful and cheap then I guess :)

Remind me to never buy a 3.0l

WHY??:nenau

My 2.7 was getting noisy in 3rd and 5th and I know of others who have blown up their 2.7 box :augie.

My 3.0l has done more mileage than my 2.7 did and the gearbox is still quite, parts can wear out on any vehicle and it's not been proved if the gearboxes are different between the 2.7 and 3.0l

Too many people like to bash the 3.0l

Good info mate, I'm just going on what I've been told, never owned a 3.0l and not had my 2.7l long enough to make an informed opinion so I'll hold judgment

Your right I suppose, it's all down to maintenance and driving style at the end of the day, plus one could just be a manufacturing defect etc etc

Well, I like my 3.0 main reason I got it was it looked more plush than the 2.7 (that is if you can call a Terrano plush lol)
I have only had it since the start of the year and have spent over £1000 in repairs for far and the gearbox will add another £1000, but hey I like the car and its done 134,000 miles so I guess it had to have some money spent on it.

Well the garage have said that some gears have gone and so to rebuild will be around 1500, so now looking for a good replacement box.
If anyone has a manual box for a 3.0 litre 2002 which can be delivered please let me know.

The gearbox on my 2.7TD failed quite spectacularly a week before I was due to drive it to Spain (a loud bang, then no drive at all).
Didn't have time to source a used box so I took it to a gearbox specialist, a bearing had broken up and caused a lot of damage. They overhauled the box, replaced the (damaged) clutch and overhauled the transfer box while they were at it.

With recovery to my local garage, then again to the specialist, total cost was £1900 (I only paid £1500 for the car).
I got it back the day before we were due to leave for Spain so it was completely untested - however it covered the 800 miles or so from Bristol to Plymouth then Santander to Malaga without a murmur, and since then has covered about 35,000 miles on Spanish roads with no further gearbox issues, so if you can locate a good gearbox rebuilder you will end up with hopefully a "good-as-new" gearbox, whereas if you go for a second hand one you have no way of knowing it's condition until it's fitted and running.

IMO a rebuild is the safest option.

Thanks for the info, it is with a specialist and so far he has only given it a test drive, but he said it is more than just bearings. Estimated it could be 1500 but will not know until he gets it out. Really unsure what to do as spent quite a bit on the truck already but can't afford to buy a new truck.
Guess it needs to come out anyway so may ask the garage to take it out and investigate a bit more.

Found this on ebay 290955377347 and this 171025525980, but I'm sure you would have seen these.
