Hi Again!!!

Fixed the gearbox rear mount no probs. Now I have a developing whine from the box itself, wasn't there 500 miles ago.

Symptoms:- bearing whine from the box in 1st,2nd,3rd & 5th. Both when accelerating and de-accelerating. More pronounced in first three gears and when oil is hot. No whine in 4th, slight rattle in neutral on tick-over.

From studying the gear component layout I suspect it might be counter gear shaft bearing(s). Any other suggestions from professionals or folks who have dealt with similar?

I intend to change the oil and add something to prolong the time before the inevitable box reconditioning. What oil should I use and what additive? Ive trawled the various posts/threads on this subject and am confused by 'data overload'.

From the workshop manual download I found API GL-4 spec. Anyone had problems with this or can suggest something better? Also I can't find Molyslip here in France but have found Wynn's products. Do they have a suitable additive in their range?

Many thanks in advance, CL

Sounds like the bearing on the input shaft is on its way out, I had this on my first Terrano the bearing was in hell of a state when I eventually got around to changing it. It had similar symptoms to yours.

Changing the oil and overfilling the gearbox may put it on for a time, if left for to long you could end up with a lot more problems and cost than just a bearing or two.

Have you contacted the molly slip man on here to see if he will send you some.

I have posted this article before, it is from Richard at Molyslip products, there is a link on this site.. I'm guess he could ship to you.
I have used this product and the box is certainly quieter after the treatment.

Moly slip gearbox treatment
The Multiglide is for both manual and automatic trans as well as semiautomatic (tiptronic) as well as limited slip diff.
It just happens to be a fully synthetic detergent rich viscosity improver with anti foaming agents and seal preservatives .It can be mixed with barium based hypoid gear oils, in cases wear there is severe bearing wear and or leaking seals. It is also perfectly suited for MTF applications. (newer trans that use a synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid)
For you needs about 105ml of G in the trans and about 100ml of Multiglide that should quiet the bearings right down and help keep your seals sticky and pliable just in case the bearing wear has stretched the seals any. use another 100 ml of Multiglide in the rear diff as it should be a LSD.
I have the Multiglide in a 250ml so you don't have to buy the 500ml flask. You can just use the G in the trans and it will help but the blend will work better.
You are always welcome to call if you have any questions 9am-9pm everyday on 01327 354 356 All the best, Richard
So far they have had luck with the Multiglide as it remains very sticky even under heaviest stress conditions.
If you catch it earlier and the trans is standard with out over drive then 175ml of Molyslip2001G®
If the whine has already started then the Multiglide is a better choice as it is thicker and stickier. It can also be used in the read diff.
If there is some bearing wear you can mix the G and multiglide now while this won't solve the problem it will buy a lot of time 80,000 miles or so.
The Multiglide will help the compounds in the G o better stick to and bond with the worn bearings.
You would still only want to use the Multiglide in the rear diff.
So far users have come back to saying the noise stopped in a couple severe cases there was even some vibration and the mix of Multi and G cut the whine and vibration.
If there is vibration the the main input shaft bearing is severely worn. Enough to allow the shaft to to move around.
if you plan to do the rear diff, she has an LSD back end so you want to use Multiglide 110ml.
The G should be fine for the trans and one bottle will be more then enough as you will only use about 160ml if you plan to do the rear diff, she has an LSD back end so you want to use Multiglide 110ml.

Hi Guys

Many grateful thanks to Toolbox and Rustic for your prompt and very helpful responses. I'll contact Richard (Molyslip) first thing tomorrow.

I don't (presently) seem to have any problem with the diffs. I've (today) changed the oils with the Nissan supplied and recommended grades, so I hope I don't need any additives in either of them........or do I?????

Ive just found a second hand box on French ebay for sale locally, having (claimed) 36k miles for current bid of 648 pounds, sound attractive. Still 6+ days to go so I'll sit and wait.

Kind regards CL

Many thanks Jace.

I've got Gearboxman in my contact list but only if I get back to 'the old country'. He sounds a very useful guy for us 'gearboxly-challenged' Terrano owners but it's a bit of a trek from the south of France. However I'd appreciate his input if he comes on line to this post.

Thanks anyway, CL

Hi to all.

Thanks Rustic re info on Molyslip. Spoke with Richard the very helpful Molyslip man and have ordered oodles of bottles shipped to France. However I won't be putting them in this gearbox.

Just had the oil drained and bits of the counter gear rear end bearing cage came out with it! (At least that's what my local mechanic said he suspected they were.) So I'm not going to waste the Molyslip trying to delay the inevitable.

Mr Nissan France wants 3375 euros (2430 pounds) for a new box but I've sourced a recon./exchange box locally for 950 euros (683 pounds) which comes with a 12 month guarantee. So I'll get the recon fitted and then I'll use the Molyslip.

Now I'll research a supplier and ball-park price for a clutch plate and thrust bearing - might as well replace them while the box is out. Anyone put a new clutch in recently?

Regards CL

i would be intrested in doing the same, however my local reckons its gonna be well over 900 quid fitted, seems the jeep was only a grand anyway im tempted to go the molyslip way.which product did the molyslip guy suggest?

Hi Leo

Yes - my price was for supply of the recon box only, I'll have to pay extra for it to be fitted, so I'll probably not get out for much less than 900.

Richard (Molyslip) suggested Molyslip G (G for gearbox?) in standard manual box. You can see what he has on offer and order at www.crewchiefs-pitstop.com.

I called him on 01327-354356. He's very helpful and happy to answer queries between 0900 and 2100. There's also a link with info under the 'discounts' part of the Forums.

Good luck, CL

Oops! Sorry Leo, re more info under 'Forums' - for 'Discount' read 'Suppliers & Products' CL
