Gear crunch

Hello all
In my Nisson Mistral 1996.
When i put the gear lever into 4x4 at a speed of approx 20mph.
There's a big crunch.From then onwards it slips in and out easily.
I wandered if anybody knew what causes it.
Your replies are very welcome.

OMG.... thats to fast. best idea is to STOP

its a great shock to the front hubs ect..

so stop. befor someing snaps

My Nav says (or at least the sticker on the sun visor, cause obviously it can't speak) you can change between 2wd and 4wd as long as you are below 50mph - did it quite a bit at around 30 during the snow.

You have to stop to put it in low box though.

Am I doing something wrong??

Isn't that just the 4x4 engaging :?: If it goes ok after this :?:
Mine makes a clunk as it goes into 4 wheel drive :smile: Now I have manaul hubs it is not as loud. Just my view :wink:

yep you can do on the move..


but im for stopping, let the auto hubs lock propely.

just my own view after reading a few threads on here

Mav terrano engage 2H to 4H at speeds below 25 mph.
So says the sticker on the sunvisor (Mav 1995 model).

BUT you can slip it back into 2H at any speed, for Automatic hubs they will stay engaged so slipping back to 4H can be done at higher speeds, BUT only if the hubs remain engaged. Usefull on snow covered roads, slipping into and out of 4 wheel drive saves having to reverse to disengage the front hubs.
Clearly Manual hubs stay engaged and slipping into 4H all the shafts are going at the same speed so there is less of a clunk.
Personally I will engage 4H at speeds below 15 mph, after all you have to drive the stationary propshaft and front diff from a standing start.... no wonder it clunks.
I must be doing something right, had the mav from new and still on the original Automatic hubs.

When i go into 4wheel drive under 15mph it still crunches.
