my truck has a very rattly box when I take my foot off the clutch.
And I cant live with it.
what parts would I need to overhaul the box and where from?
need to work out the cost of parts before I start.
and it will then give me some idea of how long it will take.

Would not bother, mine has been doing that for over 2 years, and I tow regular, it also whines such that people hear me coming unless I am in 4th then it is quiet, Rick

yep agree with Rick, mine does it, will be good for a long time yet

It does my head in anywhere I pull up.
Its either swtich the engine off or keep me foot on the clutch.
and Im worried its not good for a old engine to rattle about so much.

As long as it has oil in it, then stop worrying, if you really want to stop it then think lots of dosh that it will cost, and I mean lots, you will be better off looking for a used box, but even changing a box will be lots of dosh, Rick

its the thrust bearing thats making the noise not the engine, wait til it starts singing to you like mine does :lol

don't like it.
want it fixed.
where can I get the thrust bearing from?
I need to win the lottery:eek:

thrust bearing is part of the clutch, you need a 3 part clutch for these iirc

you got loads of money then, probably cost £750 to £1000 to sort your noise, is it worth that? Rick

sorry Rick but i have to disagree, with the noise going when the clutch is pressed down it suggests to me that it is the thrust bearing, part of the clutch, a simple clutch replacement should sort it and it can be a diy job with the right tools

Think about it, the clutch thrust bearing is in contact all of the time, only harder when clutch depressed, but when depressed the gear box is not rotating as the clutch centre plate is stationary, let the clutch up out of gear and the first motion shaft rotates as does the lay shaft, it is this that makes the noise, Rick

I thought it was a release bearing supplied with a 3 pc clutch set.
is this the same thing?
had a quick look on the bay at kits and they don't cost too much.
if the thrust/release bearing is easily accessable while changing the clutch I cant see it being a massively expencive job

Change your gear box oil first and slightly overfill it jack it up on one side more to get some more oil in about half a litre this should quiet it down a bit
Agree with rick unless your clutch is slipping and on its way out leave it be pig of a diy job on your drive if you have the right tools heavy lumps to take off
Take it to a garage kiss good buy too 500/700 quid
Do what i do turn the radio up or with four kids in truck cant hear feck all
Ps mines been doing it for three years and i too tow alot

I wouldnt waste your money on additives like molyslip and the like you need a bit of friction in your box

It's the input shaft bearing not the thrust bearing ;) , common on Aussie forums on the wd21 same basic box. Thrust bearing would be nowhere near as deep sounding

Mine does it too, it's lovely and smooth tho so no worry

Box does need over filling and is filled through top from factory

I too have the dreaded rattle.... only been doing it a little while and gets worse as the car warms up after a few miles, Spooky I found the thread so quickly as I was going to post a question about this noise!!:eek::eek:.... So I also have a very heavy clutch (to press down) and about 3 inches of play in the clutch pedal before anything happens:nenau

I was going to bleed it the weekend as I think the master cylinder is on its way out as the fluid keeps going black? I was hoping it was a problem with the slave cylinder to clutch arm because of the play..... What is the problem with the free play on the pedal? Anyone have any ideas

Need a good 4x4 to tow my caravan so was thinking maybe it was time to look at something else, especially given the cost to replace box/clutch:eek: will be a shame but need a good tow vehicle so will have to do some research

Yeah mine rattles from time to time.I did a Gearbox oil change about 12 months ago,but never thought of over filling it though.

I think your problem is the clutch centre plate . I have had the same problem with mine ;put your foot on the clutch and the noise goes . I changed my clutch because I thought the bearing was going and when I got the clutch out on the floor the centre disc of the clutch plate had broken up !!!! replaced the clutch with a brand new clutch kit and it was fine for a couple of months then it started making the same noise all over again and is still like it now 3 years later !!!! . rich
