Ok, as part of my on going investigation into my intermittent loss of power i had a look for rust and a blocked gauze filter in the tank

THERE IS NO GAUZE IN THE TANK GUYS :augie

Just the sender unit, it has a swirl pot type thing so as the fuel doesn't run out when low and on bends etc, and this just pops off, theres no gauze in it

Lots of rust around top of tank :

But spotless inside :

So, still none the wiser :/

it certainly does look clean inside. I still think it can't hurt to disconnect the snorkel and drive it as it was before. If nothing else it will rule out one more thing :thumb2

Only does it when fuel is low

in red, not sure yet. only just worked its only doing it when low

do these have a lift pump ? mine just had a sender for fuel gauge and the swirl pot, no lift pump, i assume this is under rear end somewhere tho ?

Ah ok.

What about the fuel cut off solenoid, part of the pump ?

Just released fuel cap and it gave a hiss, ie must be sucking in air, odd as I added fuel last night. Is this normal ?

Could the fuel cap breather be fooked ?

Sounds like your tank breather is blocked/not working - as the level in the tank goes down air should replace the fuel, if it doesn't a vacuum builds up (hence the hiss when you remove the filler cap).
This makes it harder and harder for the pump to pick up the fuel, causing a poor flow.
Not too sure where the breather is on these trucks, but it's normally built in to the filler cap - you haven't by any chance got a non-standard filler cap have you?
Easy way to check is to fit a cheap plastic filler cap, after drilling a tiny (1-1.5mm) hole in the centre. If problem goes away try a new Nissan filler cap.

Re the blocked breather, some years ago I had a Ford Escort that periodically would give a really loud bang from the back - that turned out to be a blocked breather, the vacuum would suck the sides of the tank in until eventually the strength of the metal would overcome the vacuum and the tank sides would pop out again, hence the bang.
A new filler cap sorted it.

My old 2.7 always hissed when I undid the fuel cap, I never had the problems that Stinka has now, so I would be surprised if it's that.

Best thing Stinka, is to leave your cap undone and drive it...see what happens, by the way, do you feel like a guinea pig ?? what with all the different trials and cures you are testing out to solve your issues:confused:

ok, did 50 miles today with cap off, was same as ever :doh

It s very intermittent and very varied, like it will start to lose power, but sometimes this lessened power ( say 60% ) will slowly get worse over 5 miles to the point it wont rev, or it will just come on like that almost instantly.

But, if I just flick the ignition off and on quick and it comes back full power instantly, like say i'm doing 60, steady throttle on a nice a road and it starts to lose power and wont hold the speed, i just let off throttle flick key off on in a split second and its back to full power

It must be an electrical item IMO, as to be fixed in a split second from the ignition being flicked makes me think it cant be 'fuel pressure or starvation'

Yeah it does sound electrical, like something is shutting down until it's reset when you flick the key again...hmmmm

Could it be a relay starting to break down, have you checked the relays to see if there all Ok..just a thought:confused:

hmm, a relay controls its component, its on or off, the long slow demise of power, then the differing and sudden complete drop of power are lead me to think its an actual component breaking down rather than the control relay, that imo would be an instant failure

Not sure how i could check a relay either, bar opening them looking for burnmarks etc

Stinka, that does sound like the case. A 'thermally intermittent component' something getting hot and it's resistance changing maybe? I have no idea what but I does 'sound right' :thumb2

BTW are my comments any help at all :nenau

lol, i read everyone's comments mate, everything gets checked thats suggested

BUT RIGHT ABOUT NOW, I'M PISSING IN THE WIND :nenau:doh :lol

Might have to take it to a diesel specialist in town
