Garage / individual who can change gearbox oil?

I live in Aberdare (twenty odd miles from Cardiff). Does anyone know of a "Terrano friendly" garage or individual who can change my gearbox oil / diff oil in South Wales area. Cheers.

I have a VW T25 camper and changed the gearbox oil in the summer. Bitch of a job! Gearbox oil everywhere as pipe came out of filler hole when I was filling it. When trying to get pipe back in the oil went in my hair, down my back... cringing just thinking about it. Rotund gut I suppose didn't help especially as you have to squeeze under the van. I had read up about it on the VW forums which gave step by step guide, tools needed, parts needed, pictures etc.

Have done very little work on the Terrano even though I have had it over 4 years. So I suppose what I'm getting at is yes I think it is within my limited capabilities but I'm a bit wary as I haven't done any work such as this on the Terrano.

So wouldn't look forward to doing it myself but might well have to go down that route.

well, id do it myself, it really is easy. more room underneath so no need to jack it up though I put mine on ramps and it was even easier.

All I will say is, of course, when you undo that filler bolt don't just undo it and let it drop, cos a hell of a lot of oil will splurge out. Open enough to let it run lightly into your container...

It's so easy to do and you know you are putting the correct oil in...It MUST be GL4 grade oil, NOT GL5 as GL5 will eat the internals in these gearboxes

And always loosen the filler plug first, then the drain plug.:thumbs

As already said, make sure that you know you can release the re-fill plug before you drain all the gearbox oil as otherwise you'll end up with an un-driveable car with no oil in the box :lol

Where would I buy the drain / filler plugs from. I've looked at GSF, Milners and a couple of other sites but they don't list them, well it's certainly not obvious. GSF have come back to me to say that they wouldn't stock them in any case.

Any pointers?

Why do you need new plugs? Are your old ones damaged or perhaps a misunderstanding as you shouldn't need to replace them.

Cheers, didn't realise you could use over. As mention earlier in thread I changed my camper gearbox oil and the recommendation there was that you change everything. If I can reuse all the better

As I stated, you must use GL4 oil in the box, I also put some PTFE on the plugs before refitting them, not sure if you need to, but can't hurt.

I used 80/90 gl4 in both gearbox and transfer box and infact the gearbox alone took 5 Lts but one thing I did notice straight away is that when the jeep is cold I struggle to change down from 3rd to 2nd and then 2nd to first but is fine when warms up ??

All the Terrano plugs are British Standard Pipe half inch taper thread, there are two types, half inch male square and half inch female, best to use the female like your original as the male version particularly on rear diff will stick down below the diff, so all are readily available at your local plumbers, for penny's, Rick
