Galvanised metal!.

I have just purchased a galvanised metal trailer and don’t really like the galvanised finish.
Has anyone ever painted galvanised metal before and if you have what did you use (Hammerite ect ) and did it stick ok?

Hammerite do a primer for galv and alloy etc - its called "special metals primer".

Nice looking motor, you can get galv primer for spraying then you could paint it the same colour as your car. By the way where did you get your sun visor.

Wouldn't any ACID ETCH PRIMER do th job?

there are plenty of primers that claim to cover any metal but most of the ones available to the genral public are a bit naff. you cant go wrong (as jimt says) with a 2 pack acid etch primer.
At work we use one made by manor paints.its a bit pricey but it does exactly what it says on the tin.most car refinishing suppliers sell some form of etch primer.
The one local to me sells one made by tetrosyl. iirc it cost about £30 for 1 ltr of primer, thinner and the catalyst. sounds alot but its good stuff.

The spoiler was imported from Holland, £160.00 plus £60 postage, Wish i had bought half a dozen (Thats 6 for our younger members :lol: )

I've seen the primer in both formats. Problem is that the aerosol cans may well be aimed at the retail market and possibly they wont be quite as good.

Can HB give any advice on this type of stuff?

you can brush paint it on once you have mixed the primer and catalyst together but dont mix it all at once or you will end up with a tin of jelly after a few days when its hardened.
the refinishing place near me does a single pack etch primer in an areosol can for about a tenner for 500 ml.

Further to the hammerite specail metals primer post above. I used this a few years back to paint a galvalised roof rack for a friend. It was a custom rack on one of the big volvos, did it in SMP and then green smotthrite (very close match to the volvo green fortunately). Being hammerite it was very hard wearing and lasted years - still going strond AFAIK but not seen him in a while. He was an antique dealer so the rack was in constant use, and the hammerite stood up well.

a small tip whatever paint you use warm the trailer first a hot air gun is good for this an dhte paint will dry harder and faster, otherwise with the cold damp iar this time of year you wont get such a nice durble finish.

I have seen people apply primers with small rollers on vehicle apintwork much better than a brush and more economical than aerosols.

having said all that, I like the trailer as it is! couldn't you just save time and effort by galvanising the car to match? :lol: :lol:

I have found that Hammerite is nowhere has good as it used to be having
used it for over 40 years. the latest is made by ICI, its thin and transparent and takes an age to dry, the original would cover with one coat and was dry within the hour, in fact its so poor I have stopped using it. I complained to hammerite but got no answer......... goodbye Hammerite

Hello,

I used the hammerite special metals primer on some alluminium last year and it didnt wear well at all, Maybe i was just unlucky?!?!

At work we use a primer called galvafroid on any railings/gates that we fit, its available from most trade paint merchants and works a treat, apply by brush or roller.
