I have gotten hold of an xtrail but she won't start.

I charged the battery, shows green in the little window.

Have checked fuel pump it's working fine.

Removed Sparks to crank and all 4 holes shoot out fuel.

While Sparks are out I kept them in the coils and grounded them and all 4 spark.

Turns over but no start

Any ideas what the problem is??:(

2002 xtrail, 2.0 petrol se+,

Did have faults logged but they have not returned after caring them (1000, 0120, 1123, 0605, 1000)

Thank you in advance to anyone who could help

If you have fuel and a spark, have you checked compression.:nenau
After that it is down to timing.
We're the leads on in the correct order:nenau

I got it with what was meant to be a bad head gasket. But wanted to test it. Only because the oil looked good so was curious. May need to get a compression kit. Though I doubt there is a haynes on the xtrail. Because I don't know the torque settings or order

There's a workshop manual same as the Terrano one very generously hosted by Briggie here;

nope something amiss... if you are getting fuel and spark... it would have to be igniting, unless spark is too weak, or timing is completely messed? :thumb2

fuel, spark and air make bang :nenau

defo fuel coming out exhaust? - i know you said out bores but...

EDIT - on that note, if battery was perviously weak you may have naffed the plugs....

failing that we have an XKR 5.0 at work atm that has a shot ECU, causing 4 of 8 cylinders to pour fuel in.. missing badly and chucking neat fuel out exhaust... even new plugs didnt make it fire...

needs a new ECU and injectors

looked at your vid, seems to be spinning a little easy to me, in the absence of a compression gauge remove all the plugs bar one and spin it over, note the response then move it to the next cyl and crank it over, what is the overall response all about the same or a marked difference between them, you say you had fuel from the plug holes if so it is deffo flooded, are you sure it was fuel? Rick

thank you for your response.

I am going to get a compression kit tomorrow and test that see if a cylinder is far lower than the rest.

if it was compression, so piston rings, is it usually one piston that goes or would they ware equally so all be low. just so I have an idea if I'm looking for one that's lower then the rest or if they all are low.... and what low would be.

maybe I could hook up my terrano battery directly inplace of the xtrail and just get some new sparks, see what happens.... assuming compression is ok.

in my other video the hazards come on after locking it up, would that be the battery?

SO MANY QUESTIONS to answer your questions with :p

low compression can be pistons, valves or head gasket, to check pistons inject about 10 ml oil into cylinder if it improves then piston/rings if not valves or gasket, Rick

thank you my good sir. put some 10w40 oil down them tomorrow. if its gasket, then change it, if its valves...?

Edit: may use my dads xtrail for a moment to use its battery and sparks

as said previously ...... we do have the workshop manual for the x trail :D

sure your cam belt has not snapped, I always thought a engine would sound really bad when a belts gone, until it happened to my sister in laws car, sounded the same and turned very easily turned out the belt was in bits

Oil in cylinders is a good one for compression to make fire.

The old Skool jags suffered with this if they had been flooded :thumb2

That depends if it's an interference engine ie: if belt brakes, pistons and valve clash.
Your sisters must have had a safe engine where this won't happen. :thumb2

Back to basics !

You need four things for a petrol engine to run.
1. Spark.
2. Fuel.
3.Compression.
4. Spark needs to be at the correct time. (timing)

If you have all 4 it will run even if 4 is a bit out of kilter.

If compression loss is due to ring wear a squirt of oil down each bore left to run past the rings enough that it does not oil up the plug when you try and start her should get it running. A tow start will eliminate ring wear as sufficient revs will allow engine to fire up and as it warms compression will be restored until you switch off.

If the headgasket has blown you can often have water in the oil but not always as a cracked head or blow between the lands can be the issue and that does not always lead to loss of water or oil. .
