I put 5W40 full synthetic in my recently aquired Terrano on the assumtion that its better stuff but am now being told by other owners that its a no-go.
Its run perfectly for 1700 miles (even towing a 1.6T caravan for half of that) & does not appear to be burning any so what are your thoughts?

I know the 2.7s don't like such thin oil, particularly in warm weather, the ideal is 10/40 or 15/40 mineral. 3.0? I have no idea, it is a completely different engine. :nenau

In my owners hand book, it states that 5W30 is preferable for the 2.7 and 3.0 for temperatures ranging from sub -30c to +40c.
It also shows 10W30, 10W40 and 10W50.
5W20 is not recommended, according to the book

5-30 isn't for that temp range, check your manual again, assuming it's the original nissan one :thumb2

5/30 is for -30 up to 15 degrees C

and 5/20 for -30 to -10

10/50 and 15/40 and 15/50 do -30 to over +40

note this is for a 2.7!

Yep, sat looking at it now and it's genuine Nissan hand book dated 2004.

5W20 is not recommended, in my book,
I have Castrol magnatec 10W40 in my 3.0, same as I used in my 2.7.:thumbs

It also says you should not use heating oil, petrol, bio diesel or other alternate fuels in your diesel engine:)

are you sure you are reading the arrows on the charts correctly :nenau I have my Nissan 2004 manual with me now the chart is in section 8-3 in the middle of the page :nenau

states clearly at bottom of page "use 5w-30 only below 0 degrees C"

YES, also in section 8-3, 5W30 shows from sub -30c to plus 40c.
I have just asked my wife what she thought it meant and she said the same as me......and wife knows best:lol:lol

well I have 2 Nissan manuals here a 2003 and a 2004, they both say the same thing, and it's what I put down above on the page i said :nenau

I will try and photo the page later, chatting on MSN at the mo :thumb2

My book says 5w-30 is preferable, if not available, select the viscosity, from the chart that is suitable for outside temperature range:confused::confused:

page 17 / 18 of the workshop manual ( section ma ......maintenance ) states

......I For warm and cold areas: 15W-40 is preferable
for ambient temperatures above −20°C
(−4°F).
I For hot areas: 20W-40 and 20W-50 are suitable.
I On turbo models, 5W-20 is not recommended.
Use 5W-30 only below 0°C (32°F).

that's what mine say :thumb2

if anyone would like to translate these figures instead of going to reccomended fluids etc ,

3. Drain oil and fill with new engine oil.
Oil grade:
API CF4 or ACEA B3-96.98 or ACEA B3/E3-96.98
Viscosity:
See “RECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND
LUBRICANTS”,

incidently , the figures and specs for fluids apply to both the td27, tdi27, and the zd it says

I wish I could take a photo of it and sent it but I'm unable to load photo's on here, it's me or my crap computer :nenau.
Is your book for the 2.7 and 3.0, mine is and that's what it states, in section 8-3 do you have 2 graphs, one shows the 2.7 and the other is the 3.0

mine book is part # OM2E-OR20E3E

on page 8-3 two graphs, one for engine oil, one for gear oil :thumb2

I think the moral of this story is don't get advice from a manual supplied with a 3.0 for a 2.7! :augie

But it's for the 3.0 and 2.7, clearly states both engine sizes for a lot of things in my manual, as they, it's as clear as mud:nenau:nenau
