i have a 2002 3.0l terrano and the fuel tank it leaking, it seems to coming from around where the tank is bolted on at the rear, is the tank easy to remove and maybe repair, also where could i get a new tank from? nissan has quoted £300 + vat,
any advice would be great cheers

Seems odd that the tank is leaking given the age of the car, unless it has been parked in the sea!!

May be worth your wile checking the fuel pipes that go in to the top of the tank.

Is it leaking when you fill up or all the time it might be the seal around the sender unit and have you checked the breather is,nt bloked

As others have said, it is rare that a motor of this age has a leaky tank. quite common however for fuel pipes to be problematic, that would be my first port of call. Mine were corroded badly, but my truck is a lot older. If it turns out to be the fuel pipes i replaced mine with 8mm copper. bn great since.:thumb2:thumbs.
Hope this helps Wayne

thanks for the info guys, i have checked the sender seal and its all bone dry, also checked all the pipes connecting to the tank and as far as i can see there are no leaks there either, so still not sure where its coming from !!

maybe fron the filler pipe?

that takeing its time to work down the the back of the tank.

Are you certain its diesel and not some other fluid....? I assume it stinks as it should?

I assume you've removed the tank shield to get a good look?

and depending on whether the leak is still there, it could be accidental or malicious damage - you wouldn't be the first person to have a screwdriver through their fuel tank...

I'd get the shield off and have a good gander....

filler pipe looks dry from what i can see, and i have taken the shield off already. when i fill the tank up to about half way thats when it leaks its seems to be coming from around where the tank bolts on, the bolts nearer the front of the car !!!

looks like the only answer is to siphon the contents out and drop the tank for a good look....that or pay the garage and be damned....but be careful to clean it out properly before refitting...not sure how easy it is to patch....or whether there is any pipework in that area that might be suspect....have you looked at the layout in the on-line manual?

thanks all for the info, looks like i will droping the tank soon and take a good look at it !!!

I once had to repair a fuel tank on a Daihatsu Fourtrak. When I dropped the tank my jaw dropped with it...it was a mess. I cleaned it up using a wire brush on drill. This had the effect of revealing hundreds of tiny pin holes due to rust as well as a few larger holes.
In addition the bases of a couple of the inlet/outlet/breather pipes were holed.
I plugged the pin holes and repaired the bottom of the pipes using 'quick steel'..one of those dual putty compounds that you knead together and then harden.

I patched the larger holes using 'Granvilles Petro Patch'.

Once the tank was patched up I painted it with POR 15 anti rust paint (amazing product) available from Frost Auto Restoration.

Refitted the tank and had no further leaks for the following 4 years I owned the vehicle.

thanks for all ur help guys, found the leak!!!! it was coming from the weld seam under the supporting plates where the tank bolts on to the chassis, WHAT A CRAP DESIGN!!!! its a water trap under there, anyway drilled the rivets holding the plate on and cleaned up the terrible mess underneath and there it was 2 pin prick holes where the fuel was leaking,
i used 'Granvilles Petro Patch' to seal it and painted it up afterwards........... as good as new now ... no leaks !!!
