Fuel Gauge shows empty

So after putting everything back together I finally have the Terrano started and running on it's new lines and newly refurbed tank however, I've plugged the sender unit back in and my tank shows totally empty and the fuel light is on when I know I've filled it with just under half :doh

I've plugged into another sender and same story, anyone had this before, no obvious damage to the cable and connector etc?

Can't be seemed fine when I installed it, also when I plugged the other sender unit in which was out of the tank, I moved the float to the full position, restarted the car and it was still showing the same

Joking aside, would it be worth filling it right up, in case it has to reference or something?

Is there some sort of electrical factory reset that can be performed on the whole vehicle, it has been out a while so like emjaybee suggests it may need some sort of calibration, I reckon it would be worth taking it for a drive for 30 mins or so and I would not be surprised if it sorted itself.

Did you assemble the tank with the sender in it, then fill it...

...did you fit tank, half fill thro' sender hole, then fit sender...

...did you assemble sender and tank on a level surface or on it's side?

Just looking for clues.

Is there a ground /earth wire connected?

When I had the rear bumper off my truck I disconnected the wiring loom that supplies the lights but it also had a connecter that connected to the sender unit but can't remember if it was like a joint to another wire that went to the sender or if it connected straight on to the sender. Obviously being a standard truck I had to get my hand betwwen top of the chassis rail and body to get to the joint.

When it was disconnected the gauge read totally empty

Sounds like a wire off/broken to me.
When i cut out my rotten rear floor i also cleaned and re painted the tank while i could access it and managed to break a wire somehow.

Thanks for all the replies guys, of all the replies I'm hopeful that I'm experiencing what Jim has had before. I have indeed got the rear bumper off and number plate lights are disconnected too.

Could it be perhaps that the sender uses shared earths with the lights kind of thing and require the circuit to be complete. I'll give it a look tomorrow as I'll be working on the truck again as soon as I finish work.

I haven't had chance tonight as it's be pissing it down all evening

Fixed it now :thumb2 There was a harness that was connected that had actually come apart slightly, pushed it back together, heard the click and the gauge shot up :thumb2

Well Jims, Elty's and my post seem to direct you to a bad connection, poor earth, broken wire, or disconnected plug in part of the loom. The rear bumper connector would be my first choice on where to look.

Normally I would dig out the wiring loom schematic, and have a look where the wires go, but chemo day today. If you are still struggling, I might take a look, depending on how hard I am hit. The oncologist is reducing my chemo strength as I should not be confined to bed for so long. I supposed to be having a better quality of life NOW not worse, so I am looking forward to how I improve. The chemo must be working, as we found out yesterday that my PSA has taken a dip and has reduced... first time during this treatment :thumb2:thumb2
He is very encouraged and can certainly see me having at least one more Christmas.:thumb2 I had a difficult day yesterday trying to get to terms with the news, It was good news... just what I needed lol.

I wonder how you got on removing the m5 bolts on the sender circular plate...
How many did you shear, and how did you drill out or retap them?:augie

They are probably the easiest bolt to shear on the Terrano.

Didn't shear one bolt in the tank!!!!! Took your advice from way back and used plenty GT85 and the old tighten, undo, tighten undo trick and it worked sweet.
