Fuel Efficiency - best speeds?

Possibly going to be doing a reasonable sized journey soon and wondered what sort of cruising speed gives the best mpg in these trucks?

I checked mine recently and around town I'm getting 21mpg which isn't the best, but I've *still* to get at the banjo filter! Plus I'd been trying to red line it to test how much it's suffering from possible fuelling issues.

I know my Octavia will merrily return 55mpg if I pootle along in the 50-60 mph range and still gets around 50mpg if I boot it up the motorway too, but obviously a Terrano shares aerodynamics with the average house brick and is geared a little differently from an Octy! So what's the scores for mostly motorway, or country road speeds preferably in a trusty Mk1 2.7 TD form?

Would be nice to nudge my MPG up into the 30's on a longer run.

Mines a tdi I get 23off roading with some hill on very tight country roads. then took the truck on a 381mile round trip up the a 303 with about 4miles of greenlanes. and going in to portsmouth she was doing 29mpg but that was stuck at between 2.5k and 3k hope that helps

I improved the MPG on my first (1996) T2 by fitting manual hubs, so for a starter do the hub service in the download section, just in case yours are sticking and turning the front shafts and diff.

Out of interest the magical '56 mph' figure people quote for fuel economy is a bit of a myth. Back in the day the government started measuring economy (70's petrol crisis) some boffin worked out that it was the average speed of cars travelling on UK roads so they used it as a test figure. That is all it is, a figure for test purposes, but oddly it does seem to aid fuel economy - weird :nenau

Consumption

I get around 29/32mpg on the freeway etc but only if I keep the revs below 3000 all the time.Works out at about 65mph average.Bit slow but economical.The moment I push over 3000 the fuel consumption drops to about 25/6mpg.Doesn't change much if I tow a small trailer.

New air filter works wonders, and as above keep below 3000rpm shold give about 26 to 28 mpg. On mine I try to keep below 70 mph which is in real speeds about 65mph. David.

get in fifth, then drive by rev counter and feel/vibes!

probably best around 60mph but adjust to optimise.

running just faster than the heavies as most of them
are economy drives too with 44tonners getting 7mpg
every little helps.

read road look for trucks get out in time, so not trapped
by faster cars.

i cover around 800 mls a mth mixed town & motorways but i try to keep to motorways when possible 5th gear 60-65mph i find the gauge is my best friend , ive had worse cars with economy lot depends how heavy the right boot is :doh

2500=3000 rpm is best, about 28-30 mpg on a run regularly...strangely when fully loaded with 5 aduklts and luggage it still does the same mpg :thumb2 mine is a 2002 diesel

The 56 mph coincides with the build up of wind resistance, over that it really affects your mpg especially with the shape of the terrano. This speed also I believe matches the max torque at 2200 rpm in fifth gear, I can get 32mpg on the motorway at this speed and 28 touring.
I rarely go above 2500 rpm. I get 24mpg towing my small caravan. regards bri

I drive mine like I stole it, my truck has the aero dynamics of a dutch barn, 35" tyres LPG Tunit power box and am happy to say I get about 25 and love it to bits Life's too short to pootle :naughty

Thanks guys for all the info, sounds like I have some fuelling issues to get to the bottom of. I probably do drive it about town a touch spirited :augie just to get onto roundabouts etc. when traffic is heavy, I find I need to belt through the gears to get any reasonable speed up.

economy ... i remember that

i get about 25-28 for an auto, and the truck either spends its life freighted or balls out on the motorway.

if u want economy by a push bike

red line (or close to it ) all the way

Mine is shite in the week I've had her, thus far

Although trundlIng from greenlane to lane today I didn't take it much above 2000rpm and it was markedly better
