Hello everyone!

Been a member for a while but this my first post so I hope someone can help!

I have a '99 Patrol and want to install a fuel cut off switch as an extra security measure. I tend to travel to out of the way areas and either hike or mountain bike for hours at a time leaving the car unattended. At first this was fine but on a couple of recent trips I have come back to find people looking over the car and when I chat to them they just mumble answers and then wander off.

I have looked over the fuel pump but can't find any wires leading to it. Has anyone does this to their own car? Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

um pass, but you could try a battey one.. seen them on ebay

Zippy, Cheers for the battery cut off info, never heard of it but after looking at some of the gubbins on the internet, switching the battery power completely off would wipe out the audio meaning coding up everytime I got into the car, not a major problem but I was wondering if there were any simple cut offs...

Toolbox, its a 2.8 TD SE, any ideas?

Fuel cut off switch

hi reames.
one quick way to make things difficult for a would be theif is to slip the high/low range shifter into nutral .
the ignition switch will have a wire that comes live when you turn key to start pssision if you put a switch into that wire then it will stop truck starting.
also have a look in fuse bank for a fuel cut off solinoid fuse ."remove it when you leave truck home alone"

Fuel cut off is a good scheme :thumb2 but just bear in mind what the "people" you are worried about dont like is noise, lights and inconvenience.

Think loud alarm with "buried" aux siren (only good if someone honest is around of course) similar principle headlights flashing.

Inconvenience takes you onto electronic immobilisers (probably better than fuel cut off switches) or good quality all covering steering locks. (the big disc ones)

Alternatively dont park there because if theres no visual (and you should use at least one) or immediate deterrent they will still break in for a go, nothing to lose.

You should have an electronically controlled injection pump; do you not have an immobiliser on it as it is? Should have a chip possibly red in your key and a led on the dash if you do.

its always me that seems to look on the bad side, but ill say my peice anyway

alarms are not really effective , ok it makes a noise but who cares. who's going to intervene.... we have all heard alarms and done nothing

so you immobilize it , but that wont stop them pinching your stuff from the car

and then once you have let them know that no one is around who cares or is going to stop them. they have had your wallet camera phone etc.
gone through your receipts in the glove box looking for card receipts
maybe an odd letter that you left in the car one day.

they then know all about you

all you know is your window got broken and you lost your stereo, maybe your wheels too

and if they think they have enough time, cos the alarm attracted no one they cant pinch it so they bbq it instead

my advise.... only leave it where you know it will be safe ideally near people or other similar cars or a house. never leave even a receipt in it.
leave the glove box open and empty same for the boot never cover it wellies and a flask will be ok but nothing else, not a bag or anything

completely empty... then they will walk on by and go for something easier

hmmmm............theoretically good (if a lot pessimistic) advice, in practice ? very difficult to follow I would have thought.

For your info not everyone ignores alarms.

lost the key to my van one day... no rac at the time i was young and dumb
so came up with a plan
smash the window, empty the tools into a mates car . it was getting late and didnt want the tools pinched out of the van.
then take them home and get the spare key and collect the van

and did anyone stop and say oi what you doing emptying that van full of power tools into your car.
we drove from north london to brighton and didnt get stopped either
never heard a thing.

we used to for a giggle:naughty, pinch our mates motor bikes
from town when they were out with the rest of the lads.
we'd pull up and shove them in a transit and bugger off
then the'd have to get a bus home or walk
sometimes we'd put them in other car parks.

did anyone ever say something

nope

park its safely and only have in it what you need for the day. never treat it like a second home and fill it with crap
never leave it alone

and yes i have grown up now:eek:

Alarms:(what's the point. They just annoy the neighbours:augie
Like extreme said, no one cares, let alone plod, they're too busy hiding in hedges to nick people for driving a white van!:doh
My mate works as security guard for MOD. He was on nights and the alarm went off for the front gate. So he had a butchers on the screen and spotted some twat dealing in the nice lights that came on for him!
My mate called plod who of course couldn't come out "right now",they didn't even come up to look at the video:eek: Too much "detecting" to do I guess:lol
My best car safety device is to always leave it minging:sly

Hi we used to use a bat cut off with an aux by pass that kept some things powered up but not the start system.

Ok lets put this consistant police bashing into perspective.

I personally have locked up individuals as the direct result of an alarm activation. The little twat who decided to cut the back window out of my car made off after the alarm went off which woke my rotti cross up who did his best to get through the front room window. I could cite you more cases than your endless anti police whinges of times when individuals have ended up locked up as a result of an alarm activation both house , vehicle and yes even a horse box.

Ok some people ignore some, if youre bugging the neighbours with naff alarms going off you want your arse kicking anyway and I wouldnt be suprised if you were ignored.

Your mate, if your second hand story is correct , and I am confident that it is not the full picture or has been distorted by repeated recital, shows your complete absolute lack of comprehension and your unwillingness to have a look below the surface. A non response at the time to the situation you describe is actually acceptable, but if theyd been at a car with the alarm going and not agot a response without good reason it breaks every bit of national guidance going and would be grounds for a solid complaint.

A non response may also have been a complete cock up. Did he follow up?

Every organisation has good and bad, dont tarr everyone the same. Pay double your council tax and you'll get double the cops. Send the money in soon.

Your comment is a bit like me saying the Nissan 4x4 club diplays persistant overt racism on its forum and labeling you with that.

There's people been in the cells would have loved to have that amount of luck on their side ;)

Hi Daved
I'm sorry to appear to be police "bashing" but it does seem all back to front round here at least. I dont have an alarm of any sort to annoy my neighbours.
So I hope my arse is safe from them at least.
I relate the video drugs deal as true as I was told by my very good friend. I also understand that the boys in blue shouldn't leave a job they're on etc. However as I was trying to say, they didn't follow it up either.
From a mere mortals point of view, it just SEEMS that the drivers are easy pickings when compared to what I percieve to be "detecting" work required to pull in these twats, as you say.
How can I help my son respect plod when his beloved skate park is used as a bottle bank by the local chavs. He and his mates did a clean up of about a bins worth of broken glass. The papers and the council said what upstanding kids they were. BUT the police still wont come up and deal with druged up drinking twats spoiling the park for others.Yet he gets a bollocking for cycling on the pavement.(No I dont condone pavement riding before you start).
Cheers for now,I have to drive to work now and hopefully wont be stopped for driving in a northerly direction again!
