After revelling in the way my T2 handled in the snow yesterday and picking up colleagues with 'lesser' vehicles to get them to work, I was left with egg on my face this morning when I had to walk the 5 miles to work this morning because I coudn't get the bloody doors open.

Admittedly the temperature had dropped to -11 overnight, but I was a bit annoyed to say the least.

I have just had a call to say that she has managed to open the car, but only with the key and park it in the sun for now, however what can I spray the lock with tonight to stop this happening again. Its supposed to be -9 later!

When trying to open it with the remote fob all I could hear was a faint click, and not the customary clunk of the lock. I really hope I haven't knackered the door lock :(

I am thinking WD40 or De Icer?

Regards

Alan

i reckon a good dose of wd40 will do the trick, you could buy a little device with a metal spike and 2 batteries, poke it in lock and turn on, defrost lock and away you go, but i dont know if you can still buy them now. :doh:thumbs

you can - I get them for Xmas from people who don't like me.

That would explain why I've only got the one :bow

Thanks for the replies. Now you mention it I do remember those lock de-icer thingies...

And don't forget you can always pee on the lock :augie....sounds nasty but in the good olé days...used the technique a great deal.....careful not to touch your Rodger onto the metal:eek:

Also used to warm key with a lighter.....all the old ideas

But wd40 is good [unless your an exhibitionist]:clap

Not had the locks freeze on the troll yet but twice had to get the kettle to the door seals as they had frozen shut.

Last winter had a big prob with the LPG vaporizer though.
I din't do the origonal gas conversion and, as is often the case, someone had conected the water pipes up wrong and it wasn't getting enough hot from water system.
Kept freezing up and shutting the gas off

i have alot of trouble with frozen padlocks on field gates etc. i usualy poke a bit of loo paper through the top and set it alight, it might not work on the car thought :lol

Izal? Or are you not that posh? LMFAO!!!!! :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

I allways used recycled, I buy it new but use it for this job recycled :lol

How do you get it to light then??? Euuwwww!!

I grew up in a 300 year-old house with my grandparents which had no lecky or running water.....if you wanted a dump you had to dodge past a herd of mental geese to the outhouse where you luxuriated on a wooden seat worn smooth with the passage (of time that is) while contemplating the discomfort of cleaning up with a few squares of the Daily Sketch which were hung on a nail on the wall.....night-time was even better, with a gazunder for entertainment :lol

wd40 works perfectly, hold can about 8" from door and press button and light the spray, that will definitely thaw the lock, dont use for to long as the paint will peel off.

No t'was the middle of civilisation.....deep in the cherry orchards of what was then Berkshire and just 10 miles south of Oxford! Like another planet! All cut down and gone now sadly..... :(

And I'll have you know we've got electricity in wales now. Mobile/TV/radio doesn't work (thank god) but at least you can have a pee with the light on!

Very cold again last night (-6), but I put plenty of WD40 in the lock and wiped around the door seal with de-icer before putting the car away last night. No problems this morning.

Some very interesting alternative offered in the posts above, but must consider the nieghbours... :)

Thanks

Alan

Do you have to lock it? Would it get stolen if you just left it unlocked on severely cold nights?

I did consider this and also putting a Crooklock on the wheel, but I'm not sure where you stand with your insurers if it isn't locked?

999 time out of a 1000 I guess you'd be alright, but I'm not blessed with really good luck... :)

& another trick :augie

Neat anti-freeze into the lock & wipe some on your door rubbers too :thumbs

WD40 the locks to drive out the water from the mechanism, then, white spray grease into the locks............

Works for me and we've seen -7 here :)
