I have noticed that where the slide joint is on my front prop it has a fare bit of play and was wondering to go for a second hand one or get one from Millners.
What do you guys think?

You may have the same problem with a 2nd hand one to be honest

Which part off the prop in this picture do you mean?

Mine was same, had a terrible vibration and noise. Bought a second hand one off a member on here and it was fine. Mine you could feel the play when it was off the truck, the replacement felt fine off the truck so I'm assuming that if you feel movement don't buy it.

What year is the Terrano?
Does it have Auto Hubs?
Does it have 3 grease nipples on the front prop shaft?

So I guess you have fixed hubs, with no grease nipples, which is why the later ones wear out.:doh

Earlier ones on my Td for example, sit there mile after mile, waiting to be turned...
So can never wear out, having said that, I always exercise the 4 wheel drive system every couple of months, which means driving on a grass verge in four high, then putting it back into two wheel drive then continuing for a few miles on tarmac as the Auto hubs have engaged, and this runs the front prop shaft and diff to exercise it.
Then I reverse back about 6 feet, and the auto hubs disengage.
I have been doing this for a very long time lol...:augie Everything still smooth.

Mine Ter is a 2001 SWB Van with auto hubs so I presume it would be classed as a later one and has no grease nipples, the play is in the slide joint and has a little rubber boot over it. I am wondering why it has a slide joint as the gearbox doesn't really move nor does the front diff housing. Might go for the new one to be on the safe side.
I notice Milner do 2 different sizes 605MM and 645mm both closed length sizes, I haven't had a measure yet .

A bit off-subject but.....
Is it worth the trouble of dismantling & lubricating the none-greasable prop. (f & R) slide joints? They're supposed to be coated with some sort of anti-friction stuff but surely a wipe-over with agreasy finger won't hurt.

I have ordered a new one rather than getting a second hand one.

You do know it does move in and out on the shaft, had mine off yesterday at ricks, we replaced the UJs and reassembled, rick also took off the whole "greasing point" off the propeller shaft tube, it look some grease too

Knackered if I do say so myself, was seized solid in one direction, yon can see why

That UJ don't look to bad Alex:lol you should have seen the ones on my disco a 1/3 of the bearing cups were missing & the cross bit was badly tapered down to the ends:eek: oh & a LR specialist said there was nothing wrong with them:eek::doh

Wish I'd of known you needed a front uj Alex, I'm stuck with a brand new one in my rapidly expanding box of spares.

BTW......
I know most people (& Nissan!) state that grease should be used in propshaft UJ's but on prievious cars I've always used ep140 oil. This tip was passed to me by a garage owner, around 1970, when the first Hillman Imp I had ruined both UJ's inside 25K. Allright I was a mad driver LOL, but they were maintained properly. After replacement I used oil & they passed 100k+. The second Imp was sold @ 116k with it's original joints perfectly sound.

I did the same on my Frontera & sold that @ 97k with joints still sound.
I can only think it flushes the old lube & any dirt/water/mud etc. out better than grease & circulates more efficiantly. It certainly appeared to on the Frontera after it had been through water &/or mud. I'd still be doing it now if only the lube points even existed on mine.

Yes I know it moves in and out but I wouldn't think it moves very far as the front diff is fix and so is the box, I suppose it allows a tad of movement in regards to the rubber gearbox mounts.

Yeah true, I'm not sure what the normal movement is, but all I know if we pulled it off the shaft, must have been 4" or so :nenau. Riiiiiiick :nenau

FWIW, [FONT=Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]My thoughts regarding later model Terrano front prop failures......
The front prop setup on the Terrano is probably very similar, if not identical to a live front axle arrangement,... as in the Patrol?
On the Terrano the gearbox is nailed to the chassis as is the front diff, so unlike a live front axle, there is very little movement other than that allowed by the resilient mounts.
With such a small potential for movement, the wear pattern on the “plastic” coating will be concentrated on a very limited area, unlike the live axle variant where the spline can be expected to move far more and subsequently distribute the wear over a greater area.
The earlier (grease-nippled) models featured steel on steel, with ability to lube, and would appear accommodate the concentrated wear far better than the plastic coated spline....
