I Like to be different from time to time with modifications :sly
So...
I'm thinking about a FRONT MOUNT INTERCOOLER
Has anybody done 1
I was thinking of removing the front grill altogether & mount it there

Your thoughts

Pros & Cons

someone has done it already. not me mind im going top mount as the parts are available from a tdi

when fitting my front winch i noticed on motorways at high speed it overheats due to the rad being partly blocked. and only a little
so mounting an intercooler to the front of the rad will likely have the same or worse effect...... overheating

:doh I'll have to follow the flock & go top mount :lol :thumbs

One of the original site owners shark1e did the front mount. Not sure if he or anyone that remembers it will reply.

i thought about the front mount option, i even got a few intercoolers to try in place but never did it.

It is a common enough place to mount an intercooler so should have no major issues, my transit van has a front mount intercooler.

the issues may arrise when fitting other mods such as winch bumpers, bull bars etc as they will all be competing for the same space.

does anyone remember the links for ali sport or somene simmilar who did an aftermarket conversion for T2's? was theirs front mount?

DOn't remember wo but these are the pics

Looks expensive to me , ill sell ya a top mounted and pipes off a tdi for 50 and wouldnt take an hr to fit.:thumbs

Being a R3M driver I have a front mount as standard, but dont get excited as is off to one side under the inner wheel arch, just like the GTS skyline I used to have. But on the skyline a FMIC upgrade was quick, easy and fully beneficial especially if you were going for big power upgrades.

If any one wants I will try to supply photos of how it happens on the R3m / Skyline / Skyline FMIC upgrage (although this will probably be a totally different pipe routing to terrano's)

I to av done it on Scoobys,RST's,Cossys & MR2's... ;)
I think i should be asking what it will do to the mpg more than anything else
Fitting it doesnt bother,i like t tinker :sly

Fitting aside which doesnt bother me...

Just need t know...

Power increase.?
mpg gain/loss.?
Engine temps.?

Affects on Radiator.?

Power increase- on a TD as stock, i would imagine +10-15bhp-they are very underfuelled.

With suitable adjustments to boost pressure and fuelling you would see a solid 155bhp and ALOT more torque in the mid range. (I would be sure to reference the inj.pump & wastegate to the inlet manifold, not pre i/c as it is as standard)

MPG- tricky one- wont be worse, perhaps 2-3mpg on a run.

Engine temps- depends if you are retaining the stock viscous fan- if so, no change, best results come from a twin electric fan conversion though. Given that we can often spend time moving slowly (eg towing) but at high load, I may add a boost or overide switch to fire up the fans when under positive boost to be safe.

Turbo temp- presumably you mean charge temperature? - well close to ambient if you use a suitable i/c, not too large though otherwise you will suffer alot of lag as the turbo has to pressurise a large volume of air before the engine actually see's it. But cooler the better.

Affects on Radiator- none, surely.

Thank-you very much for that :thumbs

With regards to the "Rad",I was just concerned with how much would be covered up by bodywork & addeed intercooler ;)

looks good adz, will it fit under the slam panel?, it may not cause and effect on the cooling, and it's a good price, i just sold the allard from my disco on ebay and it sold for £233.00 with pipes, so it's seems a bargain to me.:thumb2

Will mount it on my bull bar for a trial
But with no air con,i've loads of room for it :D

I've just done my top I/C fan today and water squirt too.
Didnt take long and the difference is easily noticed. It was a hot one today so I took it for a spin and then stopped to let the heat build up in the I/C and drove off again. Typical low rev slug.
Did it again and this time switched the fan on for a min, bingo instant difference:cool:
Ebay rocks:thumbs
