Hi guys.
My 4wd wasn't working but now iv fixed it using common sense. I figured out that the slinky Spring is supposed to push out a collar.
This collar can be removed with a quarter turn. The slinky Spring sits under this.
I have trawled the forum all day and can't find a single picture or exploded diagram of how this is supposed to look.
The previous owner must have installed it incorrectly after servicing the front hubs I think.
I might be wrong with what I have done. But my 4wd has gone from not working to working by changing the slinky Spring from one side of this quarter turn collar to the other, and stretching it a bit so it is now springy.
Is there a diagram or photo showing the order the hubs are assemble ?
Cheers

Not helpful I know but this is why I went Manuals, these Auto's are crap!!!!

This may be of some use though;

Take a look at the "Brake Ring A" and inspect the lugs on the inner edge for any signs of cracking or bending.

There's also a download that is about servicing the hubs, this too may have some more pics of it all.

Hope I don't get put in my place again for mentioning those rings.

Hi yeah
Either mine are a bit different or the diagram is incomplete.
The slinky Spring is not showen.......

Only one thing for it then, photos!

Lets have a look at what you have just in case someone has tried to fix previously.

Just what I was going to suggest, whenever he says slinky spring I think about the dog from Toy Story :lol

More imaginative than my idea of slinky spring, that toy that never really made it down the stairs:doh

Ah now it seems clearer.
Looking at what I had originally it becomes clear why 4wd wasn't working.
My Spring (slinky Spring) was between brake A and the snap ring. Previous mechanic must have botched this.
I'm loathed to take it all apart again to take photos because it's working now. But brake A is now "spring loaded" whereas it wasn't before.
I gather that's meant to be the case, and I won't bugger anything ???

Also it would be useful to have the part described "housing with sub assembly" to have its own exploded diagram.

I always intend to take pictures when I strip and clean mine but as ive always got grease on my hands I leave it:lol
A well maintained, properly assembled auto hub shouldn't give you any troubles.
I do mine about every six months or so and have had no problems in any of my terrano's over the last nine years.

I remember (many moons ago) someone removed the sub assembly out of the housing. The post will probably be in the technical section and at least three years old. I think it had photos too.

Never find anything on here so easier to take new pic, this is the two main parts of the hub held in with the multi turn circlip, the outer turns with the wheel and the inner is on the shaft so does not turn, goes without saying if the two parts run dry and start to bind up then the hub turns the shaft instead of the shaft turning the hub, this is when you get nasty noises and is how the brake ring A gets broke

second view, you can see here the dog clutch that engages when the shaft turns making the brake ring push the spring loaded inner dog into the outer one, this pair need greasing probably once a year, does not really matter how often you use 4 wheel it is overall miles that count, Rick
