Front Hubs Not Engaging

My mates 1998 SR has revealed that his front wheel drive doesn't work, some icy road and a fellow 4x4 owner observing revealed that 4x4 and low-ratio produce the necessary lights but the front wheels are not picking up.

Any thoughts, chaps?

(Yes, I thought it was OK on the test drive, but we can right that off to arsehole-at-the-steering-wheel issues :doh:lol )

Auto free-wheeling hubs not engaging, they may clean up and be fine if they are not broke.:thumbs

With car stationary, in normal 2 wheel drive, engine off, handbrake on, go underneath, and rotate the front prop shaft by hand, a glove helps to grip the front prop shaft, after a rev, one front auto hub will engage and its drive shaft will stop rotating, which means that hub has engaged, then rotate a bit more and other hub should, BUT if the front drive shaft keeps rotating, then that is the hub that won't engage, so aim to strip that one.:thumbs

Had the same problem when i bought my maverick the brake ring in the hub had snapped.Replaced mine with manaul hubs..

Dead easy fix if its just not locking in. I did a write up when i did mine, its in the down load section. (May say Maverick, but its the same, cos i did my Terrano as well) 5th one down in the DL section.

However, if your not careful you could think its the hubs and its not, it will be the diff. When you turn the prop, if the half shaft stop turning but the prop keeps turning then you have a blown front diff (Not very likly though as they really strong) if the half shafts keep spinning then then are not locking in.

Like i said its an easy fix, so dont start to panik. Just takes about 2 hours to strip, clean and re grease. DO NOT PACK THE HUB WITH GREASE THOUGH. just a nice coat of coppercoat is all thats needed.

I had exactly the same problem, was a total novice when it come to hubs, I followed the download section and it all works it looks harder than it is. Daz

I had the same problem, through lack of use by previous owner I think.:nenau

One side was almost seized, I stripped it down and got it moving but it didn't feel free enough. I got the other side off, looked inside and was greeted with bits of metal. I just put it back on, and ordered a set of AVM manual hubs which seem good for the price, £98 delivered.:thumb2

I noticed the truck did exceptionally well in the snow without the fronts engaging, apart from a bit of drifting round the bends!
