Had some time today so git under the off roader determined to re index the nearside torsion bar, tried before but could not move it on the splines, anyway got that sorted, nice and level now but while under noticed oil on the front diff near side so took a look and found I could move the drive shaft up and down at the diff end  had a look at the spare diff on the garage floor and found the shaft comes out no problem, so proceeded to strip the one on the car down, boy was I lucky not only got the splined bit out but also the broken end of the bolt, so all cleaned up and ready to refit the shaft tomorrow, you can see how bad it broke in the pic, so just shows the forces involved when you weld up a front diff, the big problem is the auto hubs will not unlock on fairly hard ground as soon as one side unlocks it relocks again as the fixed diff is still being driven by the other wheel, it is OK on mud unlocks pretty easy, I still have two front diffs so can tolerate a bit more trouble but will file it in the book that I may need to upgrade to a Lokka, Rick

Busted half shaft... are you trying to turn yours into a landrover as well...:lol:lol

Lucky it all came out, could have been a real pig of a job.

How high have you set the suspension now?

Difficult to tell the wings are a bit beaten about so give me a datum point to measure from, also I have 31s on so simple measure from ground is not reliable, Rick

As a side note, I think lockers in general are overkill ... Ok perhaps on a strong rear axle, but by locking that axle up, when you spin and it bites u just push the power and possible breakage to another point rather than the wheel spinning. I think good driving, bouncing and using momentum goes a long way

I'm also jealous cos I don't have a locker too :D

This tends to happen in 4X4 on grippy surfaces :doh

my problem was that to load onto the trailer I have not been using the load ramps, I just put blocks under the trailer to stop it gong down too far and damaging the number plate holder, but for this I need 4 wheel drive but on a gravely surface at home after I off load the hubs do not unlock so all driving at home the front axle is solid although not driven, but it all still winds up, however the damage sustained was I think at the last Slindon visit and after watching a range rover being winched from a steep bank that I knew I could do, went down turned and came back up giving it some serious welly bounced into a tree on the left and bent well reinforced nearside door protector, so lots of noise but did notice a clicking after but put it down to a hub, was wrong, but the nature of the break meant it still drove both front wheels allbeit with a bit of clicking, Rick

Not very often on a nissan though
Just Rick has his diff welded up hence the continued load .
Landies use brighton rock for half shafts :lol

I think it's got alot to do with tyres - even on grippy surfaces my old all terrains would slip when doing manouvers in 4X4 but I notice more than ever these days since using General Grabbers which seem to have more grunt and gip ..... you can feel things winding up more.

The other day I was doing a 3 point turn on a bcak road and the truck was fighting against reversing, I could feel the spring and tension in the transmission when I dipped the clutch in and I was feeling that if I tried to reverse back any more then something was going to break.

It might have been driving one wheel and the clicking coming from the other side as it slipped past the splines to even out the slight wind up across the axle.

yes but slow speed driving with it all locked up will not break said half shaft, it takes some real stick to do that, and that was what I was giving it up that bank to prove a point to the Landy guy that I could do what he could not, near the top on the near side is a deep rut, I clearly hit this with the NS wheel free spinning and the OS lacking traction then suddenly got traction on the NS that would be a sever shock to the front diff that did the damage, but I have to say I was being very aggressive, not my normal style, but needed to prove a point to a Landy that could not make it, as they were all spectators to this, Rick

Glad you made it to the top :clap worth breaking something
