Don't jump to conclusions just yet.

In 2 wd, when stationary what happens if you rotate the front nearside drive shaft, some movement and it should either auto engage in the front hub, or start to turn the main prop shaft or both...

If the front hub engages, then jack only that wheel up and rotate the wheel, the shaft to the gear box should rotate.

Were you in 4wd when you set off then before the bang was heard?
Not a good idea if you are on dry tarmac.

If it is the front diff, there are plenty around, never heard of one breaking before, but then my wife always says I never listen.:lol ( Selective hearing problem).:lol

Agreed, I wouldn't assume it's the diff. From experience I would start with the hubs :thumb2

Both half shafts should turn on the ramp, one forward and one backwards. The auto hubs probably wont engage without some resistance on the wheel:nenau
Could be worth checking the inner uj . If it is the diff I'd very happily sell you one pretty cheap :naughty

Sadly he hasn't renewed, but used to be a member eboy in Bracknell....lovely bloke with an absolute mint late MkIII....and a good professional mechanic....biker too if I recall....

If it was hubs the drive shaft would still turn just not engage the hubs on that side.

I have know the hub to have a corner chipped off the main cast 'block' in the middle causing the brake rings to sort of jam half on and overheat the hubs. It's an easy thing to check there are downloads for it.

hi all paul you rumbled me lol thanks for all the replies hadnt had a chance to strip anything out yet but been driving ok at the moment local transmision co doesnt think its diff as noise would be there all the time
cheers eboy

Have a good look at the main hub in the middle and make sure there are no chips in the edges that engage the rings, if there are don't bother with new rings just get new hubs. If no second hand autos are available you can get manual hubs from 'Milner of road'. Try 'terranobreakershropshire' a member on here, he may have second hand ones :thumb2

thanks guys will trawl through and try and find some dont wont to go manual if i can help it would rather keeep it the same but if have will so what is the differance between auto and manual
