My front diff has quite a bit of play in it , making clonking noises now and again, is there a thicker grade of oil or additive I can add to help, I know long term another diff required but 3.0l very hard to find. Had someone look at it and confirm play a little excessive but said never known one to go bang and seen a lot worse but sounds really bad at times.

Most early front diffs are hardly used. Ie auto lockers fitted.
But Nissan decided to get rid of the auto lockers on the later models and all 3.0 versions, so the front diff is now back driven via the front hubs.

Diffs were originally designed to be driven via the input shaft?:doh

There are also no grease nipples on the UJ's either or the sliding joint, so check these as well for excessive play.

Hope this helps.
Rustic.

Hi mate, have replaced uj's twice now and fitted new cv joints, if I disconnect the front prop it still does it, but you can hold the input end of diff and the cv joint ends and turn nearly 1" before play taken out. But doesn't clocking when pulling away nearly always when slight turn or uneven surfaces . Have also replaced all shocks, antoroll bar bushes and links front and back, now doing my head in!

Is there any way of retro fitting auto lockers? Would save excessive wear for normal use.

i wonder if you could get manual hubs? that would seem and ideal answer. I know you can get them for Suzuki grand vitaras with a similar wheel driven front diff situation to save where and improve MPG's so does anyone do them for T2's?

No it's on road ! And not in 4wd. It will do it at any slight camber change or turn. Still does it with front prop removed eliminating transfer box.

Do they do a 3.0 petrol v6? Or is 2.4 the only petrol model they do? Can't seemed to find any info on a 3.0 petrol version.

I have never head of a 3.0 v6 petrol Terrano, i do know a man who has a 3.0 2004 ish diesel front diff though :thumb2

i know the gearbox ratios are different on the 2.7 and 2.4 t2's , so it follows that the diffs are different too i guess

but like plank , ive never heard of a petrol 3.0 litre terrano ..... but im ready to be proved wrong

is he confusing this? the early maverick was based on a T2

a late maverick was based on a Mazda Tribune, there is a v6 petrol and a mondeo engined variant of that!

I can see his chain of though but it seems confused :nenau
