Couple of weeks ago I took the old Terrano for an MOT and sadly the old lady failed.
Needed some welding again and some other small bits to repair to make her pass again.
The welding bit got us thinking, half a year ago she also needed some tlc and now the "new" weakest part started to tear apart and where will it end?

The owner before me abused her a bit and the last love was from me the years I've owned the truck.

But coming home from MOT the misses asked me if it was wise to start searching for a new workhorse and knewing this day would come in the end I did a bit of searching online (already had a short list, not because of I wanted to get rid of the Terrano, but just currious) and so I looked at a couple of Land Cruisers and a couple of Pajero's.
Had a quick thought of a Discovery 2, but I wanted reliability :augie

So a few calls and days later I've made a testdrive in a 2007 Pajero 3.2 Di-D SWB and really liked it.
Feels a pound or two heavier than the Terrano, but also a bit of extra luxury on board as well.

Also has a couple of nice features like a automatic gearbox, climate control, xenon headlights and some other small stuff I do like on a daily driver. Although I also liked the character of the Terrano on daily base
The Pajero also has the super select 4wd II system wich gives plenty of 2 and 4 wheeldrive modes and has a rear diff lock.

Well, enough talking and a couple of pictures I took last weekend after giving it a good clean myself.

Using the truck now for 2 weeks and still like it a lot.
It has some extra weight wich is helping it when towing. The Terrano was great, but this is a little better.
More quiet inside and it feels a bit quicker as well.
Due to the lockout I don't make that many miles at the moment, but they will come again.

Do I have some plans?
Yes, at least so far...

Puting the led driving lights from the Terrano on front
Some work lights on the back, I do need them
Changing the tyres to I think Goodrich AT tyres, the Pajero stand on SUV tyres right now. They do work for me in the summer, but the fall/winter is another thing.

Also looking on the internet for mods people have done, so the list will be getting longer I'm affraid :doh

Neat looking SWB Mitsubishi Shogun / Pajero

Nice looking motor only part of the specification I am not keen on is the Zenon headlights but brilliant otherwise. That said they are cheaper to replace than most factory LED headlamps

I know on Mercedes the Bi-Zenons are great until you have a bulb failure then you need to fork out top side of £100 for a bulb and usually the control unit fails as well - another £100 or thereabouts.
I guess as time goes on there will be some aftermarket options a lot cheaper. I was just glad I never had a bulb go when we had the Chrysler 300 CRD Estate as they were Mercedes units.

Nice looking Satnav as well judging by the screen size. Before we bought our Jeep WK I almost bought a Shogun but the dealer was just too far away. The Mitsubishi Hybrid gets rave reviews as well.

I used to sell Mitsubishi cars years back they were very well engineered - the boast then was the ships that transported them to the UK and the trains that took the workers to the factory were all built by Mitsubishi Industries.

This one has de bi-zenon as well.
Hoping the lights won't fail, but you never know. Biggest bummer is that if one fails you need to replace both because of the colour difference you get.

Aftermarket there are some good brands going under the £100 for a light so hopefully it isn't going to be that painfull.

Biggest issue this truck had with its lights was the computer for the autoleveling. While testdriving it gave an error message and they had to replace the computer to make it disappear.
Luckily not on my costs :naughty

Thanks! I had already promissed to stay on the forum and I do like it over here

One of the things I almost forgot, this Pajero is a commercial again like the Terrano was.
Only they removed the back seats later on so no high roof this time.
Behind the seats is a low screen to stop things shifting forward and the rear left window is removed and replaced by a peace of plastic and thats it.

With the buy of the car I did receive the back seats and the original window.

And as far as modding, this morning I did order a switch for the driving lights.
Deceided to get one that will fit like an original switch. Only thing needed now is a bracket that will go behind the licence plate and we are good to go.

Sort of in family still as Mitsi in with Nissan these days. Have to say always like them. The first terrano was a compromise between a shogun and a discovery.

Usefully wider than a t2. Also transmission selection is mechanical. Proper levers no electric dials. That 3.2 looks fit. Have fun.

The Shogun is indeed a bit wider, feels more spacious than the Terrano did.
I've always liked the looks of the gen4 Shogun wich made the choise between an older Land Cruiser or this truck also a bit easier (and a car without dpf gets a "environmental fine" every month in our country :doh)

Also did some heavy towing, those are the moments you don't want to look at the computer what your millage is :lol
For towing the truck is beheaving great, but the Terrano did that as well.
And as I was (or still am) a big fan of the ZD30, the 3.2 litre is a bit better I have to say. Feels more like a 6 cilinder rather then the 4 cilinder it is.

Already did a small repair inside. The centre console has a top hatch and the closing mechanism was broken.
Luckily I got a orinal one from the UK :naughty

And an old vs new photo, you do see the bit that is missing:

Last thing I did was changing the windscreen wipers front and back since the old ones got a bit hard.

Also after making some more miles and finding some spare time on the internet the plans are growing a bit...

Still going for some extra light front and back this year.
Thinking about placing the rear work lights on the roof bar, I came across a mount that will fit and don't want to drill holes in the roof.
For the extra lights on the front I've ordered a push button that will look like an original one from Mitsubishi, so we will see. Then only need a bracket to go behind the licenceplate to fit the lights.

Tyres, still next year but thinking about 2 options:
Toyo Open Country M/T. Did fine a lot of great reviews on this tyre both on and off road. Down side is that I can't get them in the original size, but they come a little bit bigger wich is fine.
Or go for the BF Goodrich K02 tyre, they don't need an explanationI guess.

Also looking at the brakes. Also 2 options.
Keep the 2pots I have now and give them a good upgrade with a proper set of disks and go for EBC Yellowstuff (or so) pads.
Or go for 4 pot from the long wheelbase. Downside for this plan is the lack of proper information about the swap. Apperently you need more then just a couple of calipers and brackets. (brake booster, etc is the same though)

And last but not least, thinking about a BlueSpark tuning box. People seem to love them.
Not sure to get it, but it is crossing my mind.

Oh and short term, I'm thinking about wrapping some parts of the doors and the plastic bit on the gear selector handle.

On paper and based on the reviews I already looked at they seem to be one of the quitest off road tyres on road and seem to perform brilliant off road as well.
People prefer them over the Goodrich KM3

Very good to hear, I just brought them because £105 a corner for a Toyo tyre at that price is a miracle

Next tuesday the Pajero will be in the local glass garage.
Noticed a small crack earlier this week. I did had a small stone on the window 2 weeks ago. Didn't notice anything then, but with the higher temperatures the aircon went on and I think that was the reason it started to crack.
On the plus side, a new window is always good and the insurance does cover it :thumbs

There are a few Shoguns delivered with a manual box, but they are rare.
Most people went for the auto instead.

There are a few manual ones about in the UK. 10 years old you are looking at around £10k for a good one.

I have never given much though to the Shogun but I like it that they do a SWB. Always keeping an eye out for what would be a Patrol replacement. A “must have” requirement is that it can tow 3.5 tonne.

Looked at pick-ups and lately the VW touareg untill I came across Ferdi’s new thread :thumb2

Ferdi, what sort of fuel economie are you getting. Kilometers to the liter is fine as that is what I am used to as a fellow Dutchman. :clap

The Pajero/Shogun does 2.8 tonne for towing in SWB, the LWB will do 3.
So you have a small problem there.

Fuelwise mine does 8 - 10 km's per liter zo far.
But this without much highway driving, in June this will change and thinking the numbers will become a bit better.
Alsof cleaning of the intake should make it better, so planning on doing this job as well.

Most pick-ups do stop around 3tonnes for towing I guess. Finding a replacement for the Patrol can be a hard job.

There are a couple of Shoguns that toe 3300 or 3500kg but most are limited to about 2800kg as you say.

Here in the UK and I don’t think it will be any different in Holland, most newer pick ups will tow 3500kg with no issue. A replacement will be not to difficult to find but I like a SWB as I like The manoeuvrability compared to a LWB or pick up.

Before you say it! No, I don’t want a Defender.

Don't know many small trucks that can handle the 3500 kgs.
Not sure, but the Land Cruiser 90 also does around 2800 like mine I gues.

Most modern pick-ups will do it indeed, my reference was a Navara or something similar to it.
In my region (Drenthe) most guys use an American pick-up that do the job easily.
