Free wheeling hubs advise

Bit of advise for all you owners that still have their standard free wheeling hubs fitted...

BIN THEM AND BUY MANUALS!

The sheer number of people on this forum that are having problems with them, plus I had issues twice, so did KBEKL plus they have failed on tons of other cars I know... they are not worth bothering with!
I am an experienced off-roader of over 12 years and I have learnt that little nigly problems like that need permenently eliminating to make your truck 100% reliable!
Its at times like these when you need them to suddenly work after 1000's of miles of not being required the spring brakes! Always happens!

£150 from Millner gives you 100% piece of mind when you need 4x4 you'll have it!

It will take a couple of hours of frigging about with your old hub to repair it. Also once fixed they are never as reliable as new anyway! What is around £150 for permenent piece of mind and a lot less chance of becoming stranded in -5 degrees snow...

You may get them even cheeper if you shop around, and there is a breaker on ebay with about 50 Terrannos in stock, i'm sure he must have a used set about him...

yes i have had 2 sets fail now 1 on the mav the other on the isuzu

i would go for manuals but am thinking about fitting sotf hubs instead as it was on the horn the following year and i dont have to get cold :lol:lol

I dont understand why folk would advise otherwise! Permenent piece of mind and reliability... which in my mind when operating in difficult terrain that is exactly what is rquired! :thumb2

see now this is where people dont change them due to constant use every week or so they tend not to fail its only really through lack of use that they do fail, also add that into the fact that if you get stuck in 2wd you have to get out and manually select them so if you accidentally hit a deep mud pile you is getting dirty lol:lol

With my alloys I don't think I have much choice, with the plastic ford cover removed will there be access to the control.
I have the 6 spoke alloys as per this ebay item:

What actually carries the torque from the drive shaft to the hub, surely not the Brake rings..?

Why did nissan scrap the F/W hubs on the late models ?? and fit a permanant drive flange, will this drive flange fit the models with F/W hubs. if so this should be cheaper than fitting manual hubs.

Thanks Karl, looks like they would be accessible through the hole, probably worth putting a slot in the end of a piece of wood to act as a tool to access them.

but thats the reason i didnt get the manuals for the mav as i would have to take the hub cap off every time as well as get out the car

i have never broken my free wheel hubs , and i guess you could say if they were going to break i'd have done it by now.

manuals well i dont know , in theory i guess they are ok and you have to physically turn them on to engage.
but i guess if you use them like normal conditions, i only need 4wd when it wont move in 2wd or its a waste of fuel , so they could suffer the same problems as auto's filling up with water and rusting . so i cant see more reliable if used right.

auto's would be cheaper to fix if not in a hurry parts are available from the breakers. at a fraction of the cost of manual hubs.

yes i can see manuals work, im not disputing that. i just dont buy the statement auto's are un reliable .

and

if i ever break mine wouldn't even have the dilemma of should i buy manual hubs for £150.00 .
no i bloody wouldn't
i can fix auto's for a few quid and service them as i do the truck

and finally i think with manuals i'd be more complacent with the servicing of them and be stuck when i needed them


look after your tools and they will serve you well.

What's the matter with you all? Abused mine something rotten and still rate them highly Occasional snapped ring but then there's loads in the scrappy and there're er free:sly
Manuals you'd have to get out in the snow n mud to switch the buggers on and you've paid 150 quid :lol I'd want a man in the box to switch them on for me for that:sly
Autos are easy to maintain and cheap.
I'm sure manuals are good too but why waste 150 quid?
300 quid and you could have a front locker. I know what I'm buying:naughty

Nice promotion for Milners there mate, sure cheque is in post.

2 points, my terranos were fine for 4 years of active use, as are my trolls.

Think more break thru abuse or bodged repairs. Abuse is easy, need to
select 4wd before gunning engine, ie let it all lock on its own, any clicking
stop and try again.

Sure wouldnt shell out for an auto hub repair kit versus going manual
but sure wouldn't change what isnt broken.

Manuals are great no doubt there on or off, auto's well maybe a soft
option but convenience too. Showing the Mrs how to use 4wd one
less thing to think about. Save getting out and getting filthy turning
'em or find little used manuals stuck frozen/stiff too.

Ok good house keeping would be to lock 'em long before needed say
start of winter, then 4wd is only transfer lever away, indeed truck
will be like last batch of terranos that came with fixed hubs.

ps auto hubs are being blamed as root cause of several 4wd issues on forum
at moment incorrectly, lets try and keep knowledge being spread and not
blinkered fear.

of course you could select 4wd and engage the auto hubs . then take the rings out.

that way you have fixed hubs . end of the winter pop the rings back in

sounds like a cheap fix for a month or two. my autos been locked now as in
constant 4wd for couple of days. tempted to lever round the selector to go
manual locked mode. on troll uses the tyre brace to overide the auto option.

plus reckon with all spinning upto dog clutch be easier to get shift on fly than
first transfer forcing dog clutch to merge zero speed prop against t/box,
and then autos fraction of second later...

i cant do that in mine it has silly teeth that enguages it

but that is a good idea even if the brake ring is damaged you can enguage it by hand but is a lot of frathing about
