Due to cost I have decided to run my two gen sets on Kerosene instead of red derv, my oil boiler for hot water was originally for Kero and I re jetted it for Red but still have the original jet so that one is no problem, it is the gen sets that I need advice, they are both 1975 Lister, one 3 cyl, the other 2 cyl, I have been informed that running them on 20% Kero to 1% sunflower oil will be very close to Derv, can anyone confirm this? Rick

We used to run an old fordson dexter tractor on 5 parts Kerro to 1 part engine oil.
Ran fine and was still going strong when sold on.

mix filtered wvo into 28sec rick as its got the lub you are looking for.

there are peps that run there oil boilers on wvo all the time, its pressure uped and jet bigger.

I presume you mean 20:1 kero to veg not 20% to 1%, in which case would be about right, viscosity wise. However no reason why you don't experiment to see just how high you can go on the veg.

Yes 20:1, got 25 Ltr Kero today and added 1.25 Lt Sunflower oil, put it in my two gen sets and the 3 cyl which used to smoke a bit till up to working temp was clean as soon as the residual derv was cleared from the lines, the 2 cyl was sounding nice and running freely at full load, so time will tell, Rick

dont forget oil will clean out any shit in there so be up on filters for gen sets or put an inline one pre filter, you wont want a power stop when the washing is being doe.

Rik, I seem to recall years back that sunflower oil burns hot ! Rapeseed oil was always preferred when I ran veg oil .

Thanks for that Pete, I will try both and take temperature readings to see what is happening, Rick

Not so, no real difference in combustion temp. Confusion here with smoke temp. Sunflower is generally accepted as being the premium choice, despite the experience of one of two on this forum.

One of the biggest influences on EGT outside the obvious dumping of fuel is timing. Advancing the timing to get a good long burn of WVO will tend to increase the EGT. So if everything is setup perfectly to run on WVO then fuel is switched to fresh sunflower oil it can produce the double effect of a quicker burn and being more fluid, more oil is delivered, potentially a double effect on EGT.

Although the whole picture is further complicated by EGT also increasing if too lean a mixture due to turbo pressure being too high. Hence the reason for massive overfueling to reduce EGT and the thick, almost solid, black smoke produced by serious diesel drag racers

The worst veg oil imho is soya as that seems to have a very slow burn. At least the KTC stuff I previously tried was terrible. Tend to go for rape seed if buying fresh, which with the lockdown may be a necessity fairly soon as WVO stockpile is dangerously low.
