noticed this the two times I have locked/unlocked the Terrano. When I lock it, the dash light flashes for a while, then seems to arm ok and slows down. When I unlock it, the indicators flash wildly and some lights come on. It all stops when I put the key in the ignition and switch to on.

I think that is the code to tell you the alarm has been triggered, and what triggered it, but as I do not have a manual on my car, I have no idea what is what with the flashes...

Also , if you press the "Alarm" switch by the steering column, depending on if you press it before or after you switch the engine off, it also makes the little red LED light have a fit... never noticed the indicators as well though, but my fob only works when you are right up by the car, so I would not see the indicators from there.

hmm..its a mystery, could be the alarm is going off, but its been unplugged perhaps. I am sure i have read this same issue before, but I cant find it!

i see. so locking the doors with the key, arms the immobiliser and alarm, but unlocking with the key does not disarm the alarm?

I have ordered a new case for my key as the buttons are mashed, so hopefully I will be able to reprogram it>?

What does that "Alarm" switch do? I pressed it once out of curiosity but don't recall anything different happening :nenau

This is purely a guess based on the alarm on my V70 I had before, and a bit of trial and error, but basically, if you press it after you have turned off the ignition, but before removing the keys and opening the doors, it then disables the ultrasonic detectors inside the car, so that leaving a window cracked, or the roof open, or in our case ferrets in the car does not set the alarm off.

thats right, you disarm the alarm by putting the key in and turning as soon as the dash lights come on the alarm turns off

yep thats right, its so you can leave pets or kids in the car but still have the doors alarmed
