often wonders since the first vehicles gained TC from the ABS function if it
would be possible to retro it in principle to any ABS vehicle.

Understood it functioned more as an electronic LSD than a a locker, but
better than nothing, 21st century fiddle brakes if you will.

Useful on slippy road surfaces and well as off road proper.

Any auto IT types know if could add function.

Done some reading about and yes its traction control, only Nissan call it EPS stability control. Theres also their "All Mode 4x4i" system with its 3 modes, 2wd, Auto and lock. 2wd is just what it sounds like, auto lets the electronics select and lock just locks it into 4wd, they use a viscous centre differential (just like a freelander) - these cannot be "locked".

The front hubs on a terrano simply lock and unlock the drive shafts to the hubs. They unlock so that the shafts and front diff are not turning unnecessarily when in 2wd which can increase fuel consumption, they ae nothing to do with increasing grip/traction and are simply part of the mechanism to switch between 2wd and 4wd.

It can be done but the amount of testing needed to get the necessary data to make it work properly puts it out of the amateur league, of course for offroad purposes only it wouldn't be too bad, but for onroad, do you really want something that can apply the brakes to one wheel only wen you're travelling along without it being 110% - now a touch of left foot braking works but Nissan have put a throttle cut on the brake circuit, keep meaning to look into disabling that.

When did they do that? I dont have it on mine, or at least it's not working:sly
However I have found that my ham fisted left foot braking skills have probably left me with broken hubs :doh

Mines got it an early 2001, maybe from the Mk3's - not sure, definitely only on fly by wire models though.

from the manual - EC-400

Component Description
BRAKE SWITCH
The ECM receives signals from two brake switches. One is a conventional
brake lamp switch, the other is referred to as a redundant
brake switch 2.
In case the accelerator pedal does not return to the idle position
(pedal sticks), the driver will react by depressing the brake. In this
(emergency) situation, the ECM will disregard the accelerator pedal
signal and bring back the engine speed to 1,200 rpm.
