Well as you know chaps, it takes a real man to admit when he's wrong, I mean a real macho, hardnosed, lightbulb-eating, fornicating, quiche-rejecting, sonofabitch kind of a bloke.

Just like me in fact! :augie

After much lengthy investigation on your behalf, I am now prepared to move the argument about fixed hubs on a bit and suggest that they were fitted to all Mk IVs - that includes both the 3.0 (which we've had a few people confirm uses fixed hubs) AND the 2.7TDi.

I came to this staggering conclusion after much research, finally confirmed when talking to a MkIV 2.7TDi owner who shall remain nameless, but who is such a dickhead that, believe it or not, he actually has fixed hubs but has been driving around for the last 12 months thinking they were the older auto type, only engaging them at up to 20 mph and religiously reversing to disengage them. Amazing what people can do when they don't read the manual!:doh

In case anyone wants to check further and see if their MkIII has fixed hubs (theres no evidence at the moment that suggests they do but lets wait and see), the MkIV came in around 2002 (same time as the 3.0 engine was inserted I believe) and is characterised mainly by its front bumper which has naff moulded-in 'overriders', as against the MkIII which also had square headlights but had 'tear drop' cut outs at the lower extremities of the front bumper, plus some Spiderman stuff going on with the black inserts to the grille. So if you have a MkIII and your sun visor instructions look like the ones posted elsewhere (I'll find them and pst a link or copy the pic), let us know?

Anyway, you can have my grovelling apology with pleasure Jim :):):) but at least we now have some facts to go on rather than hearsay :thumbs

What a star man investigating so hard on our behalf.

Respect:bow:bow:bow:bow

PS my next T2 will be a later 2.7Tdi SWB with body and suspension lift and a nice set of boots:thumbs

Once, I think? :lol

Actually I was driving home to Wales and whipped the sun visor down to see what the max speed for engagement was (I think it says about 20mph on the MkII/III)....and guess what, it was the one below that rayf3262 kindly posted on another thread from his 3.0 ltr! :doh

So no more reversing or fannying about slowing down to a crawl on a main road to engage 4WD.....so far, the highest speed that I've dared to pull the lever back is a gobsmacking 75mph with absolutely no fuss or sound whatsoever (except the slightly mechanical noise from below, that I now know is the hub and driveshaft ironmongery turning in the breeze, goes all quiet as it takes up drive).

Guess thats what happens when you take things for granted and your on your third truck....:augie

Still, I don't mind being the gobby one that take all the flak just to help you lads push the boundaries of knowledge further and further :lol:lol:lol:lol

So since my later truck is probably one of the first MkIV facelifts (mid 2002 production date) its a fair assumption that all Mk IV facelift vehicles, 2.7 ltr and 3.0 ltr, are thus equipped (the sun visor sticker should clinch it), unless/until we find a MkIII with FHs......:augie

So if any MkIII owners have a sun visor sticker like the one below, let us know would you so we can update the encyclopedia! :thumb2

A real man at last:thumbs.................)

Hello, I am new to this group, having just bought a Maverick.
But my company car is a new shape Xtrail, very good car and engine, just poor seats!

anyway back to this topic, could it be with the advent of ABS?
my xtrail locks the hubs with the ABS, each wheel when in 4x4 lock mode is braked if spin occurs, so drive is sent to other wheel, could the abs be doing this on late Terranos?
when using hill decent, the brakes do a similar function, removing need for locking hubs, or that was what Nissan man told me when we bought the Xtrails for our engineers.

well interesting as hubs are - did i see Willow has come back ;)

Thats traction control - as far as I know it was never an option on the Terrano's.

Traction control is good but its no substitute for locking diffs. Landrover deleted first the lever ten the locking mech from the centre diff of the Discovery 2 - there is now thriving market in parts to retro fit them back in.

not 100% sure it is traction control, we bought a lot of these and had a driver demo day with Nissan tech bloke, 4x4 on xtrail is "soft" but apprently the lock switch locks the centre difs so power is spread 25% to each wheel, but dif will always alow for a spinning wheel to take all power, if not we would be able to go round corners, so is this not what locking hubs do? stop power loss if slipping?
i just thought with late terranos abs may have been why some apear to have no locking hubs?

my Maverick (ebay special) looks like its last owner parked it in the sea, i have spent the last 4 weeks welding and replacing brakes and suspension parts, i hate it, but have also become fond of it, it has been nicknamed the turd, as i even tried polishing it!!
