Hi
Wondering if an Intercooler from a 2.5 Pajero would work on a 2.7 Terrano 2 and if there is much involved in fitting one? Also what would be the advantage of an Intercooler? Thanks for your help.

im sure we have talked abou this before, try doing a search..

if you have air con on your T2 theres not foom behind the grill, as normaly the intercooler sit on top of the engin, no tsure if the bonets with a hole will fit a T2 that dont normaly have a hole.

Thanks Zippy, tried a search but it didn't find anything. No Aircon so would probably try fitting near the rad.

i still recon its got to be easier to fit a mav/terrano tdi intercooler to a td

Didn't someone come up with a reason in another thread why it won't be all that easy - besides the bonnet issue.

Also if you're going to fit an intercooler you might as well fit it in the proper place in the first place - ie up front. Manufacturers only fit em on top of the engine for ease and cost reasons, at the front is the best place to have them really.

Ok, so any info on how to fit one if I do get a Terrano unit, what bits are needed and if it is possible to fit one up front rather than on top? Thanks for all the info so far, great to have so many willing to help.

It has been done before as there was photo's in the old gallery:augie as for parts you'll need some alloy tubes & silicom hoses to pipe the air from the intercooler (mounted infront of the rad) to the inlet manifold & from the air box, plus some brakets to hold the intercooler in place:DTBh the bigger the better:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs

Thanks Sweety, looks like I'll have to wait until the Gallery returns to the Forum

on a fast car i can see the use for fitting in the front.i.e evo scooby etc
but on a big slow diesel engine i cant see the benefit due to the amount of hose and fittings you will need i bet you'd need 5-6 metres and thats after the turbo so its slowing the air flow down down slightly

to get the best you need lots of cold air over the intercooler so you need to drive fast to get colder air. people dont race these about cos they are too juicy so the direct aproach on the top with little/ no hoses i recon is best and i recon nissan did too

i have a td and a tdi and when you look at both together you can see there is room to sit a tdi intercooler on the top of a td. (with a little imagination)

ok you will need a bonnet scoop but i still recon you could get all the parts of a tdi needed and a scoop for around a hundred quid if you shop around

in the summer ill have a go and probably prove you all right, and have a big hole in my bonnet for nothing :lol

This from the guy who thought putting an air scoop on th eroof might ram more air in. Its not how fast the air arrives in the cylinder that matters its how dense it is, colder = denser, turbo's heat up the air, you need to cool the air after to get the density back up.

Its packaging and cost pure and simple otherwise why would nissan have used top mounted on the Pulsar, Subaru on the impreza etc.

People have fitted intercooler fans to reduce heat soak at low speed, with a front mount that heat soak is imeadiately reduced.

And as Sweety says - it must be yours that slow cos mine certainly isn't and as for economy - it uses what it uses and I live with it.

Tell me about it:eek::eek:I'm going to have to leave the tow strop attached to your next time so I can keep up with you:doh:naughty

its not slow ... well the tdi iant. the td is a bit.

but looking at the pics of one done on the front, i bet the hoses cost a couple of hundred alone then an intercooler that prob cost 400 quid to do

then you strap it to the hot radiator and run 6 meters of cold air hose over a warm engine.

ok i might work but it would work better without all that hose getting hot and the extra 300 quid would work very nicely in my wallet too

its not just nissan that put them on top most trucks are on the top too
Toyota Mitsubishi ford to name a few

i dont dispute the front works
i just have a hunch the top works as well without all the cost, and like i said id try the top first and will in the summer then we will have something to compare notes on

The intake temp will be cooler on a front mounted one than on one that sits above the engine & turbo

That was an installation by Alisport IIRC.

You can pick up the gear to do al that for not much over £300 if you shop around.

Mines got a top mounted intercooler but I still plan on fitting a front mounted one eventually
