Hi, does anybody know the best way to get at the starter motor to replace it?
It looks like a real pig of a job to me :(

starter motor

it is a bit of an awkward one.i removed the o/s front inner arch cover which exposes a bit more of the starter motor.cracked the bolts by putting a 14mm ring spanner on them and just gave them a tap with the hammer.its a bit fiddley to get at the bolts but mine came out by hand after only a few turns with the spanner.a ratchet spanner might be your best option if it will go on the bolts as there is very little room to get much movement on the bolts.
hope this helps

Hi, Elty,
thanks for the input.....have now discovered that it's the ignition switch which is at fault after looking through previous posts on the subject....should be considerably cheaper to sort out, hopefully!

p.s the avatar was alot of fun to do! especially as i'm SO kackhanded! :?

starter motor

had to replace that on mine.it fits on the back of the ignition barrel.if you had posted a week earlier i could have sold you a nearly new one.cost £45 from nissan.might be able to get one from a breakers a bit cheaper.if you are really gentle with the key when you start it you can get them running.used mine for months before i got round to changing it.

Elty,

yep, found that turning the kery VERY, VERY slowly, it starts! Wierd! My son is a Volvo apprentice mechanic and he's ordered the offending item for me today. Should arrive tomorrow and fitted on Saturday! Yippee!

once again, this forum has saved me a fortune! The guy in the local garage up the road quoted me £350 to fit a new starter motor and said that was definitely what the problem was!

A whopping £350.00 Saved, Fantastic. -welldone-

new part fitted [£32 from Nissan] took 30 mins tops to do. part number for the ignition switch, if anybody needs one, is: 48750-70J00 SWITCH-IGNITION.

Car starts first time, every time now!

Hi, I think i have a sticking starter motor as it starts 'if i clout starter with bar' while my mrs turns key !
Do you think the internals/screw action just needs cleaning/greasing?or would it be the solonoid playing up.....
At first i thought it was the immobilizer or wiring, then the ign lock/key but what do you think ?
I have no time to book garage etc as i am leaving to drive 2000 miles to Bulgaria Sunday...towing a vatara behind. What do you think i need to check before journey..

well, looks like I had two problems. one was the ignition switch but I still had the occasional time when I would turn the key and absolutely nothing would happen. Tap solenoid with a long rod and away she'd go!
Have just fitted a new startermotor [£130 from Electrostart] and what a pig of a job it turned out to be! Not just getting the bolts loose etc but actually physically getting the starter motor out from the engine bay! Even worse trying to get the new one in! I could never be a mechanic.......
took the old solenoid to bits and found that water had got in and rusted everything up [o ring had perished]

Hi all, Ive been away to Devon without the Terrano for 2 weeks and on my return tried to start terrano , starter turning very slow and assuming battery was flat, I put it on charge overnight next daty refitted battery still starter was turning slowly and would not start, tried to jump start, to no avail, so only one thing left to check "starter motor" removed front wheel and rubber skirting to expose starter, undid top and bottom securing bolts with difficulty, using ratchet ring spanner as suggested in previous thread and it works, removed cable from solenoid and with some effort managed to get starter upwards, then got it stuck by brake pipe going into master cylinder, put plastic bag under screwed lid on master cylinder and undid brake pipe and removed starter from car. I then put starter in vise to test it, but could hardly turn the pinion on the shaft, opening up the starter as explained in the cd service manual and found the phosphor bronze bush had disintegrated allowing the pinion shaft to move about and jamming, had a look on ebay for replacement £130+ so went to local scrapyard and got one for £25.00 refitted it and struggled to get it back in place and to align it up with bell-housing to screw bolts in and eventually success, connected cable and replaced battery terminals and it fired up straight away. job done in about 3hours and grazed knuckles, I will try and referb the old if poss.

rustygates.
