Hi lads and lassies. Okay I know this is funny but ive never actually serviced any of my cars and this is me changing that. I have the day off tomorrow and all the parts to service my 2.7td terrano. Im just looking for some advice.

-Do I need to jack the car up? Axel stands to drain the oil or can I get away with not?
-Whats the torque setting for the sump bolt?
-how much engine oil does it take? Ballpark figure?
-specific tools for the diffs/transfer box/ gearbox?

I know what a newbie, but hey I have to start somewhere.

If better for it to be on axel stands whats the best jack points?

Cheers again. Onwards with the mechanical knowledge!!

Hi. I managed to change all my oils with it still on the ground. Make sure you loosen the filling plugs before draining just incase they're stuck fast. At least you can still drive it for help. I use ptfe tape on the drain plugs too.

It's also customary during what most portray as a simple operation, to curse and swear whilst removing the oil filter. This allows your wife and any neighbours nearby to make an assessment on how difficult this task is turning out to be and attain an indication of how it's progressing.

During the process, if fitted with the 2.7 TDI, an involuntary sacrifice of knuckle skin may occur and this will cause an equal and proportional reaction in the form of certain phrases which your neighbours may now wish to take their children indoors.

As the filter eventually gives in to your raging quest, it will more than likely spill some stinking black oil all over the chassis member below dripping unpredictability around your oil pan ( anywhere but actually in it ) and onto that lovely block paving drive  and just as it comes off the last thread .... you drop the oil filter down into an area which is unreachable only to pour out making even more mess :eek:

or is it just me

yep that is about right, Rick

Can be done on the floor, 1/2" Ratchet to undo the plug, DONT LOSE THE COPPER WASHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Whats the torque setting for the sump bolt?

Not sure on that one without checking the workshop download but after you've done it a few times you just know

-how much engine oil does it take? Ballpark figure?

7.2l of 10w 40 Mineral for me IF you are doing the Oil Filter as well, if you are make sure you get a decent one and not a Boshi as it wont seal right!!! Blueprint, Mann, UFI, Toyo I've used all those and they have been grand :thumbs

Just a case of making sure you have the right fluids and ensuring you can actually remove the refill plugs otherwise you're stuffed if you've drained the fluid and can't get it off as the car is stuck where it is until someone with bigger muscles comes to help :lol

Most of all, enjoy yourself and watch those knuckles :naughty

haha grand well looks like a fun day ahead, i bought an oil filter wrench thingy, and have tons of newspaper at the ready to hopefully save the driveway, so here goes. hopefully doesn't take all day haha. cheers again lads

Managed everything except the fuel filter as my supposedly professional filta strap thing went and snapped. Rubbish.

The oil that came out was mega thick black glup so definitely needed done.

Car drives better now.

Result!

Good luck with the fuel filter, just check but im sure i saw a sownload how to guide in the quick links section.

I'm not saying that your oil had or hadn't been changed for a while but oil in diesel engines always goes black and horrible.

Anyway well done:clap

Spot on fella for asking. I here all of ridicule from people on other forums coz everyone's an expert. And like you say everyone of us gotta start at beginning. But most just do it and balls it up. So good man! And think of the cash savings too. this forum is def one of the best for just good honest simple advise so ask away fella and save loads of cash fixing it ya self :clap

Re your oil if you still have it, do the glass test, two bit of flat glass one drop of oil on one and place other on top and squeeze gently, should be about 25mm diam, then hold up to the light if you cannot see through it, then it was past its change time if you can see feint outlines it was due, if clearer images then it has a bit to go, compare with new oil now in engine, although black you will see what I mean, this is a rock solid method of determining your oil state, Rick

Nice tip Rick cheers I will try that out tomorrow.
Cheers jim its a good help that guide, its totally seized in there though. Will try again tomorrow.
Cheers madmark, im not afraid to ask and I have had hollering from other forums when I did the brakes on my last car.
Banshee no smashed knuckles. But by eck that filters in a weird spot

The cabin filter was mental! I thought my heater was broken but nope just a solid filter and the car doesnt smell quite so bad of dogs now, any tips on getting rid of wet dog smell?

I also noticed some holes on the exhaust that looked to have been filled with filler so I now need a full exhaust, any recommendations?

And all the aux belts look worn out so hows best to tackle that?

I know more questions haha but you all love it!!!

Wet dog smell, check your carpets for dampness. There one or two water ingress areas that can cause a minor probelm so give your carpets a good check, front back in the boot all over.

Glad you managed it unscathed matey :thumb2

I have a full PowerFlow stainless all the way through :naughty sounds awesome.

I also need to do belts and have to admit that's a job I've yet to tackle and would probs search/ask about myself, one of my belts is very worn!!!

Wet dog - I had my Terrano cheap because it came with the essence of the last owners dog. It was proximately 4 months after the smell had subsided considerably before my wife would drive it.

The smell ( if it is dog related and not serious damp ) will more than certainly be in the seats and carpet.

It will keep reoccurring for a few years especially in damp weather. Forget the fancy spray foams and halfrauds cleaners - you need to remove the doggy slops from inside the foam of the seats and in the carpet fabric. You will need a manual carpet shampoo vax or something similar and you will need to use about 10 gallons of hot water shampoo solution to do the whole truck. What comes out of the seats will probably put you off your dinner and it will take a few days with the windows down to dry her out. ( don't forget to put a bin bag on the seat before driving to work :doh
This will knock the smell down but it won't cure it over night - it will fade away over the next couple of months after shampooing. :thumb2

yeah its definitely dog related as when i cleaned it out there was bucket loads of dog hairs in the hoover, I'm not that bothered but it really annoys the mrs. I pretty much bleached the whole motor as there was some mold in it, i checked for dampness and it seems dry throughout so i think its the lingering dog smell.

with get a carpet cleaner and give that a go, good call.

Banshee do you recon the belts are a pain in the ass to do? do you have to lock the pulleys as the lower one has started to squeal on start up.

Did you get a sports cat on your power flow exhaust? I'm getting a quote from a local specialist today that fits power flow.

I'm not sure to be fair buddy but I'm not going to worry until the weather gets a bit better anyway, I'll do a bit of searching on here later and see if there's any useful info/pics, I'll report back :bobby

If you want my opinion, I'd pull all the seats out, do a Deep Clean, hoover the hell out of the carpets, clean interior plastics and then give the whole carpet about half a bottle of Fabreeze, once you've done that put the heaters on the foot setting with the re-circulate switch on and drop the drivers and passengers window a tad.

Leave a few hours and re-fit the seats :thumbs

Tried and tested

Cheers ill give that a bash when I get back. Off to aviemore for some skiing!! I know, I know, not as cool as snowboarding but who cares!!!!
