Yeah I've KO'd brake rings after they've tried to engage whilst moving, they tend to start to hum first then you get the clunk

Think you need to remove the multi turn circlip and remove the inner hub, check for heat pick up and enough lubrication, these two parts binding is what causes the brake ring in pic to deform, Rick

i had put it back together wrong after a strip and regrease, was done in a hurry (moving to wales and other stuff) i rmember now th e hub making the clicking and after about 400miles i stripped it again and forced that ring back in place
