Thinking of getting one of these??? A bit unsure as to the type I need for a 2002 diesel 2.7 tdi.... is it OBDII or EOBDII ???? most only seem to fit post 2004 diesels?? I have borrowed one from a friend but a bit wary of plugging it into my car unless I know it is the right one......I am confused :nenau:nenau:nenau

i'm the same, been looking at them for weeks now, mine are OBDII, but want to make sure they do what they say they do, :doh
 
how do I find out the OBD type???? Come on peeps... someone must be able to tell us :thumbs:thumbs:thumbs
 
ODB tends to be older cars, ODB-II is for newer cars. Not sure what dates etc.

Pete (makeitfit) got a ODB-II one working on his 98 maverick.
 
Uk/Euro diesels were not required to be OBD or OBDII compliant until 2004.

Petrol vehicles 2002.

Makeitfit is using a bespoke Nissan Consult unit. Sorry, it has NOTHING to do with OBD.
 
unless you have a volvo, my 1999 v70 had obdii, and the wifes 53 reg has it as well, bloody funny that, any ideas why they would have them.

Well the one I have borrowed is CAN OBDII compatable so guess it covers all types of vehicles and the 2002 terrano I believe has a 16 pin socket for diagnostics (I will check the workshop manual) so this should fit... looking on the web it is all around when it became industry standard... 1996 in USA but 2001 for petrol and 2004 for diesel in Europe/Asia but many vehicles prior to the 2001/2004 had the ability.... The newer vehicles of today apparently need the CAN ability...... now I am gonna lay down as I fell like an anorak on the subject lol :lol:lol:lol

Uk/Euro diesels were not required to be OBD or OBDII compliant until 2004.
Some were. especially where it was advantageous to sell into the American market.
I have yet to find a pre 2004 Terrano that does not use Nissan Consult as the primary diagnostic link.
This I/F has been around for some time and still exists on NOW OBD compliant vehicles. Simple way to check:

The OBD-II specification provides for a standardized hardware interface—the female 16-pin (2x8) J1962 connector. Unlike the OBD-I connector, which was sometimes found under the hood of the vehicle, the OBD-II connector is required to be within 2 feet (0.61 m) of the steering wheel (unless an exemption is applied for by the manufacturer, in which case it is still somewhere within reach of the driver). SAE J1962 defines the pinout of the connector as:

  1. Manufacturer discretion. GM: J2411 GMLAN/SWC/Single-Wire CAN.
  2. Bus positive Line of SAE-J1850 PWM and SAE-1850 VPW
  3. Ford DCL(+) Argentina, Brazil (pre OBD-II) 1997-2000, Usa, Europe, etc. Chrysler CCD Bus(+)
  4. Chassis ground
  5. Signal ground
  6. CAN high (ISO 15765-4 and SAE-J2284)
  7. K line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4
  8. -

The assignment of unspecified pins is left to the vehicle manufacturer's discretion.


Nissan Consult uses pins 12 & 13.
The vast majority of diesel Terrano's do not have any connections fitted in pins 2,3,6,7,10,14,15

I'm happy to be an anorak on the subject,... Simple, is unlikely to work.
Just do what makeitfit has done. Cheap and it works.

It is VERY unlikely to work, most of the connections I have listed that you will probably NOT find on your 16 pin connector form the basis for OBD connectivity. SO NO I very much doubt it will fly.
I have a VAgCom CAN/OBD diag interface for use on VAG vehicles, I would not dream of expecting it to work on my 2002 Terrano.
I also have a Consult I/F, and that works fine on the Terrano.

Be very careful before buying a code reader to make sure that it is compatible with your vehicle. Nissans used their own OBD standard that is NOT compatible with any other standard such as OBD-II until 2007.

My 05 plate (Aug 2005) Nissan Patrol has a 16-pin OBD-II connector BUT the on-board diagnostics are NOT OBD-II compliant and an OBD-II code reader will not work. Nissan dealers use a Consult-II device - and third party code readers need to be compatible with that.

As an aside, you can read ECU fault codes on the 16 pin connector using a paper-clip (or short piece of copper wire). Simply connect it between pins 1 and 8 and then turn the ignition on (do not start). After two seconds, remove the wire. The engine warning lamp will then flash. If there are 5 long flashes followed by 5 short flashes then the ECU diagnostics mode is active but there is no fault code stored. Any other series of x long flashes and y short flashes indicates a fault code 0x0y (i.e. if x is 9 and y is 5 then the code is 0905 - boost pressure fault).

After reading the codes, you can clear them by re-inserting the piece of wire and after two more seconds, turn the ignition off. The fault codes for my Y61 Patrol (ZD30 are) are:

I have seen only one code reader for sale on Ebay that is compatible with the Nissan Consult-II. (Ebay auction title is "053 UK Nissan Fault Code Reader Scanner Tool Consult II"). It will also allow you to read data streams from sensor. The big downside is that it is about £175 delivered. :eek:

Unless you really need more than just reading codes, why buy an expensive code reader when you can do it for free?

These work well, the problem with these is that they are wired for the old 14 pin connector, however it only requires a 14 to 16 pin connector and four wires. Not difficult to do.
Software (for windoze) can be found here for FREE! This s/w has been specifically tailored for the diesels other packages have not.
No substitute for being able to read live data

True you do need a laptop of some sort. ECUtalk IS the freebie consult s/w.
The Consult i/f is not complicated, it is just serial data at 9600 baud.
The interface is only required to shift the 0-12V serial data to RS-232 levels for the computer.

So IF you have a laptop available, then for around 25 quid for the cable and the FREE ECUtalk s/w you are up & running:thumb2

hi mate want to buy 1 from ebay to read codes and live sensor data will the ebay 1 work for both and where could i buy a 14pin to 16pin connector from, as i have a white 16pin connector in my terrano 2.7 tdi X reg (2000)

i got an obd11 plugs in ok tells me code but i lost list of codes. it also clears fault code when i ask it to so sort of works.
