Used to have x2 12" fans on my terrano, a Nissan ac fan and a universal one, thinking of upgrading to just a single large 20" fan, but should I? Or should I have 2x 12" fans? I'm going to be selling the Nissan OE aircon fan if anyone's interested, possibly even the universal one if I go for a single large unit

I think you'll be better off with two fans as you can cover a bigger area of radiator.
I think the most you can do is a 10" and a 12" slightly diagonally set if you see what I mean.
Twin thermo so 1st fan comes on at 88 and the 2nd at say 92.
I could be wrong on the temps but something like that , search mate, it's been done on previous threads :thumbs

Two fans, twice the reliability, separate stat switches, so on average will use less power than one large one.:thumb2:thumb2

The one nearer the top could have the lower temp switch, then the lower one will rarely come on.

A new nick name for Ryan...

Ryan two fans...:augie

Now when not being used, the fans could use the ram effect to generate power to charge your other battery, saves having a second or larger alternator.

Won't actually generate much, as the profile of the fan blades are not optimised for generating.
But you do like gadgets.

Right, 2 fans it is then:D

@ ttt2, I'm not removing the viscouse, I'm keeping it in place, purly for the roar

@ rustic, I did try generation, useing a pressure washer, but move, blew the fuses:doh

@makeitfit, that setup is overly complicated for what they are fir, I'd just switch them on when towing:D

why have oem and extras, when oem is good enough for extreme towing.

kenlowe used to say on their ads, that whilst swapping to electric could
help improve mpg, when things hit the fan oo-er on foreign towing n hotter
climbs better to refit the original.

seems a lot of faffing about? for sake of it. will only end up over cooling it.

has the viscous actually not cooled it for you.?

viscouse is fine just heats up when towing so wanted extra hepl

I have never had temperature problems towing with a T2 on the original fan, and TTT2 has seen the sort of things I tow! I tow right up to the max 2800k and have been know to go a little more on the odd occasion :thumb2

I do remember fitting a new water pump on one TD years ago and the temperature seemed lower and the fan cut in and out better than before, so maybe it's a new pump/viscous coupling that you need? :nenau

My fan is a viscouse so is on all the time, only heat when towing up hill, had a now rad back in 2011 as it overheated and blew up, theirs even a thread on it

they aren't fully on all the time, or at least they shouldn't be.

the difference on on/off was noticeable after the pump change on my TD especially when towing, and the temp was a little lower :thumb2

maybe you should consider investigating the OE fan system then?

Yes, I have another viscouse fan and water pump, I'll fit that whilst the front end is off:)

there must be some test you can do to see if it is working properly, maybe you could start another thread to ask advice?

How about a lower temp thermostat? I don't know what's available but commonly standard uk spec vehicles have 88 degree stats and you could maybe get an 82. Don't go too low though or it will take ages to warm up in winter.

Don't be tempted to run without a stat. In many system designs the restriction of the stat improves flow characteristics and without it you can get cavitation and problems with cooling the rear of the engine leading to overheating on the back pot.

You could also add some "water wetter" to the coolant to improve it's efficiency.

Also don't go over 70% antifreeze. Antifreeze is a poor conductor of heat, that's why you need the water. Also too much antifreeze affects the boiling point too. So in fact more water to antifreeze helps cooling.

Always assuming that your cooling system is in good condition and you're not just wasting your time with fans, stats etc in order to overcome a radiator that in poor condition internally/externally.

The rad and everything is very good, new heater matrix fitted be me earlier in the yeah, theirs a thread somwere, also changed all the pipes too:thumb2
