What i don't get is there was not an issue with the handbrake before it went in

If you slacken the handbrake cable, and the cable is free to go into the rear drum, then there is nothing that can cause it to bind.
If the collar on the cable where it enters the drum is crushed due to rust and collapsing, then it can crimp the brake cable, thus keeping the brake on.:doh
This might be what has happened.:nenau
Other than that, the auto brake adjuster, which doesn't automatically adjust, :doh might have been over adjusted during assembly.
When mine is adjusted correctly, the hand brake easily holds the car and a two tonne+ boat on a trailer on a slip way steeper than a 1 in 4 with no problems.
There is a knack in the setting up of the handbrake, where the key is to start with slackening the adjuster under the handbrake lever.
Then use 2xM8 bolts in the drum face to ease off the drum, if it binds, then slacken the 2 M8 bolts slightly then tap the drum with a mallet... NOT A HAMMER.. and you will hear the shoes drop back, then the drum should slide off.
Then adjust the auto adjusters then finally take up the adjustment on the handbrake lever.
Any other way, and the efficiency is compromised.
I have been using this technique for many many years, in fact some still remember I have had my Mav, from new for over 19 years...:doh
