A weight related thing

I'm looking for a trolley jack to use on my Terry and given that they weigh just over 2000k, would a 2 tonne high lift do the job safely?

The original bottle jack is wedged at a funny angle in it's holder and the original brace is missing..........

hi

my 2 tonne trolley is not up to it, and the factory bottle only just qualifies too.

my plan is to look for a decent air jack, but again lift height is limited on some versions.

:eek:fftopic:

sorry guys you have gone off topic and also hijacked someone else's post!!!!!!!!!!!!

i use a 2 tonne £19.99 cheapo trolley jack without worries, need to use a block on top of it sometimes to get the lift, but still never had a problem,
p.s my T/J is poss 6yr old now

and i always use axel stands once up to sit on.

Out of interest why? Is it height you're struggling for or lifting capacity? What sort of trolley jack, a hobby style or a full size?

I thought it was a related issue as I was searching the forums for the kerb weight of my Terranosaurus. Machine Mart have a jack which has a 2 Tonne capacity and a high lift, my logic is that since a trolley jack is lifting only one end or quarter then it won't need such a high load rating. The 2 Tonne is £29.99 and the 3 Tonne is £41.99, do I really need the extra capacity?

I could go out and look at the vin plate but that would be too easy, this waist size takes a lot of training

I've got one of THESE

It lifts a couple of cm less but is nearly twice as wide and thus a lot more stable.

Thinking of getting an alloy one like THIS though for carrying around, cut down on the weight in the back and make it easier to lift out when needed.

TROLLEY JACK

HI ALL
I use a small trolley jack 2 ton it fits under back seat .it lifts high enough to change wheel and all for £10.
regards iandouglas

i use a 1.5t alloy trolly jack with no problems its only got a short reach but if you jack under the axles you dont need anything bigger.
these vehicles have a kerb wieght of around 2t but you cant lift the whole car on one trolly jack so you are only lifting around 1 ton at a time. As shark1e says always use axle stands and i would also sugest wheel chocks as when you jack the back end up the handbrake doesnt work with the wheels off the ground and trolly jacks have wheels.

Good advice also put it in gear, first in best and 4L as well even better, remember you have to drive forward to engage 4wd you can't do it when stationary unless you have manual freewheeling hubs.

prob with trolley was lift trying to use body points as per bottle. using front suspension was fine once found safe non damaging point. with rear its getting to axle from back, hence long rod supplied with car.

emailed an ebay company their air 2 tonne will lift 500mm they reckon again ok under axles.

Well I think your advice has saved me a few quid, sounds like a 2T will do the job.

The service manuals all show the jacking points to be rear axle and what looks like an area somewhere under the front axle/engine/bash plate region, not looked for it yet though

I've found the factory jack behind a panel in the boot, where should the brace and jacking hadle be located? have searched around but can't find them!

cheers chris

if it's the long wheel base it is just under the second row of seats. there should be a long bar and a plastic wallet with a screw driver and wheel brace which forms part of the handle. Sorry have not got a clue on the SWB location.
