Had T2 out for a short drive this evening and it started reading an extra 700k miles on the digital oddometre. It should read 091760 but the first 0 keeps changing off and on to 7. The longer I was driving the more it was reading the 7 instead of the 0. If I give the top of the dash a thump it will go back to saying 0 instead of 7. Anyone know does this mean the oddometre is goosed or is it some fidgity thing with contacts or wires that can be sorted easy enough. (I may not be online for a few days so my apologies for any delays in replying).

i doubt very much that it is the lcd display , it is far more likely to be the connection at the back of the clocks .

Maybe you have discovered a rift in time and space.

Did you notice using an extra 28000 gallons of fuel?

Theres no reason it couldnt be the connection but unfortunately on the age truck you have its more likely the display if its a (and I cant remember the proper name :doh ) magneti morreli ?????? which appeared on your age of truck.

If that is the case it can only be fixed by refurb or replacement. Had the same problem on my 2002 T2 , just lived with it :D

intermittant electronic faults are invariably caused by poor connections , whether it be a dry joint , broken track , or loose connector ,its very rare for a lcd display to have a intermittant fault ,its far more likely for it to fail completely rather than have a intermittant fault .

Briggie, daved, mudlifecrisis thanks for the replies. We can definately rule out the time-space rift because the time clock didn't blink while all this was going on and I definately didn't put 28000 litres of diesel in.

It is a magnetic morelli display and it does appear they are prone to failure. In fact it is the second display that has been fitted to the truck. It is written in the service log that the original display was changed at 36,000 miles. If it was a loose connection or even if the display was failing would it affect just one digit? The rest of the digits are fine and normal and clocking up the miles are the normal rate.

perfectly possible only 1 digit can be affectedby a intermittant fault ,however ,taking into account your comments about the replacement display ....and if i had the time ..... id be looking at why , but then again it may be easier to just replace the display rather than look for a fault you may or may not find .

kind regards

pete

I remember doing an internet search some time back about the displays on these trucks and recall there being a noted problem with some of the magnetic morelli displays being faulty as daved suggested. So it may well be a design or manufacturing fault with the displays.
I will keep an eye out for a display although I have no intention of going to the dealer for one. Will just keep thumping the dask every now and then before I would fork out loads of dosh if it turns out to be a dealer job.

thumping the dash indicates to me very strongly a intermittant connection , whether it be a dry joint or something else .

Well, my old Sierra Sapphire used to give me my fuel consumption in reverse amongst other things, so I'd say it's either bad connection, or simply a faulty LCD.

I feel another rip off of the dash coming on in the coming week or so when I get the time. You may be right about a connection as I definately get an intermittant problem with the remote door locking and the electric windows. The truck is not getting as much use as it used to and when I don't use it for a couple of days some of the stuff doesn't work for a while. It usually comes back after a short while. Will be using the truck a good bit this weekend so most things should be working properly again by Monday. Maybe the oddometre will sort itself out by then too. Will let you know.

a lot of electronic engineers these days would rather just replace the part than diagnose the fault , perhaps its cheaper too , but when i was a electronic engineer we where trained to detect faults down to component level .... sign of the times i suppose with board swappers :nenau

Think you are probably right about electronic engineers being more parts replacers than fixers these days. Maybe its the nature of the way the components are being manufactured and they are cheaper to buy than to fix. Well that's what I tell myself anyway before I usually go ahead and take stuff apart on the excuse that if i fry the thing its no loss as the technician is not going to fix it anyway so there was no harm in having a poke at it myself. Ooops!!!! :doh :doh

my T2 did this under warranty Nissan reset it back to factory settings this wipes its memory and returns the odometer to 0

Apart from going to a specialist repairer for refurb theres nothing us normal diyers can do beyond sealed unit level.

Mine did all sorts when it was thumped and after several hours of external connection checking I can assure you none of them were the problem.

Conversations with several specialists basically nominated these type of speedos as a lost cause.

Proof of the pudding is in the s/h values (not to mention dealer prices) if you can find one ;)

As mentioned by daniel its well doucmented and seems to be a classic fault :thumb2

I think "these days" electronics are WAY more complex than they used to be, hence why its more common to board swap, it makes more sense as time is lots of money and folk dont want to pay for a diagnosis, they want to pay for a fix. :thumbs

Mines same ,just live with it,mot tester wont put it at 7 so dont worry

Agreed. Its like teles isnt it. Fix old portable, £50 an hour without parts. Buy new flatscreen from Tescos for less :nenau

Think you guys are right and I will just live with if for now. Did a lot of driving in the T2 this weekend and the first digit on the clock kept changing between 0 and 7 mostly when I hid a bump. The thump on the dash is still working to correct it but soon changes anyway. My next test is not for two years so I will get used to it and just give it a good thump before handing the keys to the tester in two years time.

next test??

there is a place in willows gold dust list you can send away to get it repaired.
