Had T2 out for a short drive this evening and it started reading an extra 700k miles on the digital oddometre. It should read 091760 but the first 0 keeps changing off and on to 7. The longer I was driving the more it was reading the 7 instead of the 0. If I give the top of the dash a thump it will go back to saying 0 instead of 7. Anyone know does this mean the oddometre is goosed or is it some fidgity thing with contacts or wires that can be sorted easy enough. (I may not be online for a few days so my apologies for any delays in replying).
You may find out very soon that the display will alternate between 0 and 8, not 0 and 7.
LCD displays, like LED displays are multiplexed.
Briggie will understand this.
What happens is all 7 segments of each display are controlled from one circuit.
The individual digits, units, tens, hundreds etc are driven by another part of the circuit.
The individual digit is pulsed exactly at the same time as the data is correct for that digit. Then the next display is pulsed etc, this pulsing is very fast, hundreds of times per second, so the display looks stable.
BUT if the control to the most significant digit is faulty, then the display will show what ever it sees, and this may be your 100's digit. hence a 7 and maybe an 8 later.
So in my opinion it is a connection between the main control electronics and the display.
If damp gets in it can cause similar problems.
My first career was an electronic Engineer, I used to design instrumentation, and digital logic. As you can probably tell when I get hooked into any electronic or electrical faults. Have to keep my oar in now and again.
My Father used to laugh when I used to hit things, and then they would work.
He said, "3 years at University and all's you do is hit it"
I said "It's 3 years of University that you learn where to hit it and how hard " :lol :lol
