Thanks zippy. The problem doesn't bother me enought to get it fixed at this point. As long as the truck is running fine and the oddometre is actually working then I can live with it. In case you were wondering, by next test I mean next NCT (the national car test as its called over here) and they are only every two years (although that's changing to every year in the near future).

that and the fact its all surface-mount manufacturing rather than old-fashioned transistors, resistors etc.. that could be easily unsoldered and replaced - makes it uneconomical to do anything else but module replacement most of the time.
and guess who's new truck has exactly the same issue - i nearly choked on my savaloy when I saw 765,000 miles come up

Sorry to hear you have the problem with the new truck. Is there any chance the oddometre in these can be replaced separately or is it part of the whole dash unit and the whole dash unit would need to be changed. Just wondering in case I see a dash unit laying around at the breakers next time I'm out looking for bits.

its a difficult one Dan in that if you are planning to run it into the ground, why bother - but if you are looking to move it on later, you need a garage to do it and document it if any later buyer is to believe your blarney about the mileage LOL. My other 2002 MkIV had its dash replaced at 53k miles but all sweetly documented by a main dealer.....
No plans to sell the T2 as yet so will probably leave it alone. Original dash already replaced at 36000 miles or so and it was documented by dealer as yours was. No doubt about it but these dash displays do seem to have problems. I'm just surprised that when a next dash was fitted on mine by a dealer it seems to have been another of the faulty ones fitted. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

My dash board stopped working completely a few weeks back, no dials, lights or nothing. I looked at getting the dash off, but couldn't work out how to do it.
In the end I removed all of the fuses, cleaned them and put them back. This probably didn't repair it, but the dash was working again when I switched on the ignition. It's so easy to do this, it has to be worth a try.
With the usual level of paranoia, I have always had with my vehicles, I am awaiting the faults return at some future point!

Apologies for reviving a fairly old thread but thought it might be of interest. The problem of the oddometre reading an extra 700,000 miles is sorted. The fix is as follows--do nothing and keep driving until the clock reaches 100,000 miles. Since the first number changed from 0 to 1 the problem has not returned.

You may find out very soon that the display will alternate between 0 and 8, not 0 and 7.
LCD displays, like LED displays are multiplexed.
Briggie will understand this.
What happens is all 7 segments of each display are controlled from one circuit.
The individual digits, units, tens, hundreds etc are driven by another part of the circuit.
The individual digit is pulsed exactly at the same time as the data is correct for that digit. Then the next display is pulsed etc, this pulsing is very fast, hundreds of times per second, so the display looks stable.
BUT if the control to the most significant digit is faulty, then the display will show what ever it sees, and this may be your 100's digit. hence a 7 and maybe an 8 later.
So in my opinion it is a connection between the main control electronics and the display.
If damp gets in it can cause similar problems.
My first career was an electronic Engineer, I used to design instrumentation, and digital logic. As you can probably tell when I get hooked into any electronic or electrical faults. Have to keep my oar in now and again.

On my first car a Mini, a mechanical odometer, when it got to 20,000 30,000, 40,000 miles it used to take weeks to change over to the next digit...
So similar problems have been around for a long time... :nenau

i contacted a firm in london that specialises in these repairs, they implied it was a track on the board. my mileage goes down not up.digits only display in half then go back to normal.
